  1. Hi

I'm confused as to the best way to backup DVD movies with all the different options available for mac os x! I'm hoping that you can shed some light on this! What is the best (ok many diff ways to do stuff) to backup a dvd from when it is inserted into the drive? What tools to use? i have followed the Video_ts -> divx tutorial for ffmpegx, but didn't add any extra options as i'm not sure what to add! Please help a newbie backup some dvds! :P

Basically you need (1) a ripper, (2) a transcoder (if the movie is over 4.4gig), and (3) a burner.

In my opinion the best way is to rip with MacTheRipper, transcode with DVD2OneX, burn with Toast. The latter two are commercial software.

If you intend on using ffmpegX (which I don't, but since you're in this forum...) I think you'll need a ripper that can rip the whole movie into one huge file. 0sex can do this. ffmpeX's dvd9>dvd5 function will transcode it, and you can burn it with toast or DvdImager+apple disk utility. Note you wont get menus or extras this way.

  3. Like I said "I have followed the Video_ts -> divx tutorial for ffmpegx, but didn't add any extra options as i'm not sure what to add!". Whast options should I choose to create a high quality divx from my dvd rips? If possible can someone make a preset and give me a link?

    Thanks

Sorry I've given you a stupid answer ... didn't see the 'divx' part of your post.

I have no experience using ffmpegx to go from dvd to divx (although I'm sure the results are very good). I only use it the other way around, divx to dvd. I think you should try it without any 'custom options' for now, the results should be great anyway. I'm lazy and use handbrake to convert to divx

I think you are misunderstanding presets. Everything you need should already be in the preset pull-down menu. No one makes their own presets.

    Good luck!
