I'm in the process of trying to convert an OGM file (with subtitles) to SVCD. I was following this guide:

    https://www.videohelp.com/forum/userguides/170944.php

... and then hopped over to this one, to try and get the subtitle stuff to work:

    https://www.videohelp.com/forum/userguides/153058.php

Everything seemed to go alright. I was able to load the OGM file (renamed to .avi) in TMPGEnc (ala guide #1), but I quit when I got confused on the process of adding subtitles. I then went looking further on the whole subtitle deal and found guide #2, which seemed a more direct way to do that... so I set in to do that. I had my renamed file (ogm to avi) and an srt file for the subtitles.... I downloaded the ffdshow filter as instructed, and enabled subtitles........... now here comes the problem. I can no longer open the OGM/AVI in TMPGEnc without an error.... I can't open the OGM/AVI with Windows media player without an error that shuts the whole darn thing down..... and I can't even click on the OGM/AVI file from Explorer without causing an error that shuts Explorer down! Just touching the stinking OGM kills everything!

... Now, I'm sure what is to blame is this "ogg directshow filter," because it's little black and white icon pops up (multiple times actually) on Windows' task bar every time I even touch the OGM (or renamed avi) file..... but I don't know what to do about it. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling ffdshow, but aside from that I don't even know what more to attempt. I'm on XP if that makes a difference.... thanks.

Okay, I scanned through all that and it looks like a lot of good info (I bookmarked it for after I get past this problem)... but I'm not seeing where it addresses the problem I'm having...... where I can't even touch the ogm file without crashing stuff.

... or maybe I missed the answer somewhere in there?

Try opening the OGM with Virtualdubmod and save as avi using direct stream copy in the video mode. Also, go to Streams>Stream List and disable the audio and subs streams. If all goes well you'll at least be able to work with the avi without crashing you system. Then you'll have to conver the audio stream you want to wav by going back to stream list, right clicking the correct stream and selecting full processing mode, then click the save wav button. Then select the sub file and click the demux button.

At this point you will hopefully have an avi video only file, a wav file and a sub file. Make sure you have the sub file named the same as the avi and that you have Vobsub installed that way the subs will show when you convert the avi to mpeg. If the subs still don't show you can try this guide.

I'll attempt that and get back to you. I already have the sound in wav format... and subtitles in srt.... does it matter between srt and sub?.... I'll attempt that with the video and then post how that worked out. Thanks again!

I'm still having problems with even viewing the OGM to see if the subtitles are active. I can start encoding now (without TMPGEnc errors, thanks for that)... but when looking at what I encode it doesn't look like they're working.

I still have something else to try in one of those guides.... but I'm thinking there has got to be a solution to the problem of the OGM crashing my WMP or Explorer, seperate from the actual encoding............ like a codec, or filter, or something.... is there anything like that that could be missing or clashing with other stuff?

Alright... I got things fixed. I ended up doing a system restore (since I'm using XP), so then I could load AVIs and OGM files without it crashing everything......... I guess there was some sort of codec conflict or something.

.... then I used this tutorial: https://www.videohelp.com/srtsubsvirtual.htm to get the subtitles to work. I haven't encoded the whole thing, but I tried a small sample and the subtitles definitely worked, and nothing crashed! ...... thanks for the help you guys.

  8. I had the same problem. But in my case, the file was an avi file encoded with Xvid Codec. Every time, just by clicking and highlighting the file, was enough to crash it, causing Windows to pop up with an error message ("send report"). The only way for me to open this file was with WMP Classic, and even then the app would crash eventually.

Trump's post about restoring his system inspired me though I didn't go that extreme. I simply uninstalled the Xvid Codec and now all is well. No more crashing and WMP even plays back the file fine (it couldn't prior to when I installed the Xvid Codec).

One weird thing is that I have several files and in checking their properties, all showed to have been encoded with Xvid. After the XVid uninstall, they now show Divx.
