This may be a loaded question, because I know how touchy everyone can be about their "Favoritre software"...but here goes:

If' i'm capturing video from a digital camcorder, editing, then outputting back to Digital video quality AVI format,, are different programs going to give me different quality video, since it's essentially the same standard? I've used both Video Explosion deluxe, and Studio 9, and I"m not sure that THe studio 9 is quite as good as the VE outputted file. I'd love any comments or suggestions!

    Thanks very much in advance!

  2. Strange, there shouldn't be any difference in quality if it is a DV camcorder.

    Why not?

When omnpotnt edits the file, some codec installed on the PC decompresses it. The editor then changes it. Then some codec recompresses the file, before it is sent back to the cam.

Even though DV is a standard, I doubt all codecs are equal, and I very much doubt all editors are equal.

So if you see a difference, there are very good reasons why there might bee a difference.

  4. I see. I thought he was saying that he captured with one program, then another, and the quality was different. Which doesn't make sense, because the "capture" is actually just a data transfer from the tape, which was compressed by the DV chip in the camera.

If your programs are re-encoding the video then different progams may have quality differences, but it's always better not to re-encode as that always results in quality loss. If you're only cutting and splicing then it's possible to do that without re-encoding. If you're actually changing the footage (transitions, hard subtitles, filters etc.) then re-encoding is unavoidable.

omnpotnt: Here's a link to the Doom9 forums that discuss different DV codecs that can be used to output DV to a video file: http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=a402018d35da7c389655c95cc5c0ec2e&threadid=33526
