  1. Before you go don't warez WinXP, this is a legal copy with the CDKEY and stuff. So this is the real copy. I'm unable to play ANY VCDs and this is pissing me off. I can play .avi, divx, and all that sort of files EXCEPT Video CDs. They aren't (S)VCDs or anything special. Just VCDs. Someone has to have a solution here...

  2. What players are you using? Are you just using Windows Media Player 8 or whatever comes with XP. If so i would use another player such as WinDVD or Power DVD. If you have tried these though have you tried playing them through Windows Media Player 6.4. I think this is included in Xp but if it aint you can get it off a number of websites. I havent checked this myself but is there a SCSI1HLP.VXD in XP? If so this might need renaming.

  3. I got XP a few days ago, and all of my devices stopped functioning. DVC-II, my DVD decoder, almost everything. Luckily, I got my modem working. I think you might have the same problem. Do you try to watch the VCD through your DVD drive? If so, we share the same problem. If you want to be able to watch your VCD on your computer with Windows XP on it, I'd suggest opening the .dat file from the cd through Windows Media Player.

If all else fails, uninstall XP. That's what I did so that I could capture Buffy with my DVC-II. So far, no regrets...

  4. Oh, one last thing. Check for a DVD decoder update online through the windows update center. One window kept popping up saying that I needed to download a new DVD decoder thingy, but I ignored it, and now it doesn't show up anymore! I wish I hadn't done that...

Tried all the above already, and nope, no scsi1hlp.vxd file in WinXP. And how do you install Media Player 6.4 onto XP? VCDs work fine on my other PC(Win9 with 6.4 and on my VCD player. I think this is a lost cause... It's funny because it USED to work on my PC. After a while, my pc couldn't play VCDs, did a format, and the problem still exists. My CDRW drive works fine though.

The reason you cannot play VCDs in WMP in Windows XP is that this newest version of WMP does not have an MPEG codec. This is stated on Microsoft's site under MPEG in their database.

In Winme and prior version the MPEG codec was included. To make a long story short you will need some software with the codec to play your VCDs or MPEG2 files in XP. If you have an existing DVD player with software in your computer then you are set.

I opted for the Ligos player which is $30 from their website. Once installed it enables the WMP to play my files. http://www.ligos.com

There are other players/decoders out there however some are not compatible with Media Player.

I just installed my copy of XP Pro (full retail copy) Installed on a blank hard drive.
And it plays MPEG's just fine, even opens DAT's of a VCD disc and plays them

    Also MistaG
WMP does play MPEG files it's listed under Microsoft Technet article Q245608
    or here's the URL

  9. Holy shit, things are starting to get wierd. I am totally unable to copy any .dat files from any VCD wihout it giving me this wierd error "Cannot copy blahblah: Invalid MS-DOS function". Any files can be copied from the CD except the .dat files. This is starting to not make sense. BTW, my CDRW drive works fine with any other data CDs.
