Hello.
When I record to DVD-R using my Pioneer DVR-510H recorder and play it back on my Sampo DVE-611 player, only the 2X speed works. When I try to use 4X, 6X or 8X, the Sampo freezes up and goes back to the start of the title. The Sampo plays 4X, 6X, and 8X properly on commerically made DVDs.
Specifically, I recorded from the Pioneer hard to Memorex 4X DVD-R medium and used the one-touch copy (fast mode); SP 2-hour quality; frame-accurate Enabled; Pioneer 'Video Mode'.
Does anyone know which modestly priced DVD players will play the fast-forward properly for DVD-R discs recorded on a Pioneer DVR-510H?
In another post, someone said that they could not play anything above 2x fast-forward on their Apex 5131 when the DVD was recorded on a Panasonic E80H. It sounds like a similar problem. They also said that Sony, Pioneer, and JVC DVD players worked ok in fast forward modes faster than 2X for media recorded on the E80H.
Thanks.

I have the Panasonic E80 and I have the same problem. With my APEX 5131 but I do not have the problem on my Sony or JVC or Pioneer. It's a problem with the info file's as the machine has to finalize the disc to make it play on other player's. The Panasonic E85 that just came out I think does not have this problem. The only fix is to rip the DVD on the PC and re-author the DVD with TMPG DVD author or ulead.

Thanks for the info.
Here's a summary so far of the Sampos I have tried with my Pioneer DVR-510H burned DVDs:
Sampo DVE-662: Won't play the burned DVD at all, although I have only tried one burned disc so far.
Sampo DVE-611. Will play burned DVD but the fast-forward and fast reverse will not play properly above 2X speed. Player freezes up and returns to start of title when trying to use 4X or higher. Plays ok at 2X speed.
Sampo DVE-612(N): Plays the burned DVD ok including all fast-forward and fast reverse speeds. Note that this unit is not the same as the DVE-612 and uses different chip sets.
All three of the above Sampos play commercial DVDs ok including all fast forward and reverse speeds. -
"nixie" I have some question about the 510 can you control the burning speed if the media is 4X can you tell the 510 to burn at 2X or 1X.
On the Panasonic editting there are two way's to edit one by shortening the file's buy deleteing the commercial in the hard drive also this let's you have more space on the drive by take out the commercial's. Also this is how to edit for high speed dubbing.
The other way is from a play list this you still edit the commercial's out but they do not get delete from the hard drive. You dub in real time so you can watch the show as you burn. This is a recode and in put's chapter's in the mpeg 2.
Can you please tell me how the 510 doesiit's edtting? Thank you -
I don't know of any way to control the burn speed in the 510 when going from hard drive to DVD. It looks like it simply detects the type of DVD and picks the fastest possible burn. I've had the 510 only a couple weeks and haven't used it much, so I don't want to say it's impossible when there might be a way.
The 510 will burn 1x, 2x, and 4x DVDs according to the manual. You can down load the manual at the following site. The 510 is listed about a thrid down the webpage. Also, check page 56 and 58 in the manual.

Regarding editing, one can edit the commercials out of a title on the hard drive and then copy the edited title from the hard to the DVD using the One-Touch copy button. You simply push the button and it copies the title to DVD at high speed and lossless. I've done this and it works ok.
The other way is to add titles from the hard to a copy list. The titles in the copy list can also be edited. Apparently one can edit them in the copy list without disturbing the originals in the hard drive. The copy list is burned at high speed and lossless. There are options to burn at a higher compression than the original in the copy list, which means a recode. I haven't tried this mode yet.
You can check out pages 56 and later in the manual for the descriptions. It sounds similar to the two methods used the Pan 80.
