Windows 2000 Professional is stable enough to do it for a long time. Linux can go (it seems like) forever without rebooting...Originally Posted by Dr.Gee

Has anyone done an MS search to see what they say about 2k and XP?
I know that they did say, on their own site, that 98 would lock up after something like 44 days, 7 hours, without touching the KB or mouse.
Also, during the first Gulf war, the excuse for missing all the Scuds with the Patriot missile was that they didn't have time to reboot the computers, which required it daily.
I don't know if they were running 3.1 or some flavor of unix, but that should give some pause.
I used to keep mine on 24/7, just shut down the monitor, but in recent years, shut down to go to bed, or leave the house, unless processing something..
Somewhere between half and a buck per day for electric, so why waste it?
Systems are all at go, 98 and 2k, so happy, I am.
Cheers,
George -
I leave mine on all day except when I leave my house more than a few days.

This computer (Windows 2000) is my central server, and runs 24/7 for just over 4 years straight now. The only time I reboot is when WindowsUpdate says I have to
or I install new hardware. No special cooling except for an extra case fan, and a standard 300W power supply. Currently runs 4x 120GB 7200rpm drives + 1 DVD-ROM.
My workstation w/XP is barely ever on anymore, except when I capture/convert video, so it gets rebooted about once a week I guess.
My one laptop w/XP is barely ever used, while my new laptop w/XP is on near 24/7 also, and gets rebooted every couple of days (when I am programming and go* somewhere I shouldn't go*). -
I only shut my workhorse machine (XP pro) down when it blue screens or refuses to close an application that is locked, maybe two or three times a day?
Mind you the XP machine I use as a server, that does nothing but that, has been on since some time in 2002..... -
"Is it true the if you turn off and on your comp often that it shortens the life of the hardware?"
Yes, in the old days but modern parts are much better now & are able to deal with on/off's.
Im in California & power here costs a fortune. So off at night, no use to keep it on at night, I don't sleep walk. -
The main reason On/Off would cause a PC or any electronics (TV) to fail was because of the ON/Off switch.
Now that the PC uses ATX power supplies (vs AT) it is always 'on'. Just like a TV. How else would you be able to use that remote??
But heat still plays a part in decreasing the system's life time with on/off.
Leaving a PC on forever when it is not needed is a waste of electricity.
Turning it off when you are not using it for a period of time (at night) is a good idea to balance electricity cost and how freqent the PC heats/cools.
Turning it on/off freqently is a poor idea. If you are going to get back on it in a few minutes, just leave it on.
