I'm going to install XP Pro on my older computer, upgrading from 98SE. I'm planning on a clean install. Currently, my boot drive is an 80GB WD drive connected to a Promise ATA-100TX2 card. I'm using the Promise card with this drive since my motherboard is only ATA-33. Will I be able to install XP to a drive connected to the Promise card? Or will I have to connect the drive to the motherboard IDE first?

An interesting asside, my dvd burner, a NU Tech DDW-081, would not work well when connected to the Promise card. I could only burn at 1 to2x. Anything faster and I would make coasters. Connected directly to the motherboard it burns 4x media at 6x just fine. I still can't burn the same media at 8x. No big deal for me. My 24x TDK cd burner works just fine on the Promise card. Go figure.

    Thanks,

    Andy

Probably depends on your MB BIOS. If it has the options for boot disk that would include the drive on your controller, should work. I believe my TX2 controller and BIOS permits me to boot from a drive hooked to it. You could check your BIOS to see. Your memory and CPU speed should be enough for XP. I never tried the TX2 I have with my burner. I use it for a DVD ROM and a backup HD.

  3. Boot from your CD and prepare a floppy (or another CD) with your controller's XP drivers.

When the XP Pro installation starts, it says 'Press F6 to install 3rd party drivers blah blah blah' Press F6

Follow instructions and install XP drivers

    Should work from then on.

  4. You can also download a 6 floppy install executable from Microsquash that allows CDless install .... it may also install additional drivers that may help recognize your ata100 board / drive

it is not truely cdless. The floppy discs just start the booting and setup process. You eventually need the cd.
