I just tried posting this topic but when i pressed submit it took me to the login screen and then I lost all the message which took me ages to write, so incase it did go through i'll keep this brief.
I have 4 ogm files that don't play in any player apart from videolan where they work perfectly. I have checked the codecs with GSpot and it tells me that 2 are XVid with Vorbis audio, but thinks the other 2 are just ogg audio. Directshow tells me they are all XVid MPEG 4 with Vorbis. I want to make VCDs with them and I have tried EasyVCD, Nero, TMPGEnc, Virtualmoddub, Mainconcept, AVone but they all crash and'or tell me the files are unsupported. I have tried different combinations of codecs and ogg splitters but things get worse rather than better with the explorer preview problem occuring more often then not. I believe it's a problem with the codecs due to the fact that videolan plays them, is there an mpeg encoder that also uses it's own codecs like videolan? Would it just be easier to make a dvd rather than vcd? Does anyone have an idea what i should be trying to do next? Cheers in advance

Have a look at this guide, which involves creating an avi file using Graphedit that should open much easier in your mpeg encoder of choice.

Cheers for the suggestion, it seems promising until I press the green play button and it crashes.

You can install the Xvid codec (use rc4 - it seems pretty good to me) and then the Ogg Vorbis codec (for audio demuxing - both these are in tools section). Then open the file in VirtualDubMod (tools section), select stream list, demux the audio to an ogg file and disable the stream - I don't think TMPGenc can deal with ogg, but I could be wrong. Then select file->save as avi, make sure and select Direct Stream Copy or you'll get a giant uncompressed file. Then open this new avi file with TMPGenc (or whatever your encoder is...). Get an ogg-wav converter for the audio and save as 48khz wav and you're ready to go.
G'luck
