this is Sigma Design's new MPEG1/Mpeg2 encoder card
this is from the same company that made the HollyWood PLus DVD decoder card (actually HOllyWood Plus component are part of the card)
anyway anyone know if it exist a macrovision disabler for the DVR? something like the ZoneSelector program for the HOllyWood PLus card.
I'm interested in it being able to encode macrovision protected source.
I currently have the following MPeg1/mpeg2 encoder card.
SNAZZI
PV256T
DVCII (Dazzle Digital Video Crapper II)
Real Magic DVR
and is in the process of testing and comparing all of them in terms of quality, performance etc..
I can't use the DVR to encode dvd movie clip to do the sample for comparison. I need a way to make it encode the clip.
thanks, this is for my own to see which I want to keep. if anyone is interested I can post a result test/conclusion

geniv,
...and don't foreget the wintv pvr - even though it's a USB device and
only has 352x480, YOU CAN'T BEET THE QUALITY!! ...that you can
get from this unit. Even though 2520Mbits for the usb model is not
a standard or supported setting, this is what I use for my TV caps and
yes, DVD caps are even better! Oh, did I forget to mention, it also
MACROVISION free!
As an example, I did a DVD cap of "The Fifth Element" with the PVR at
2520Mbits - quality was excellent!!
Then, I did an cap (of same DVD) with the ATI Rage Fury Pro. Guess
what, BLACK screen. Was the card bad? No!! As another test, I ran
my satalete through my switch box (2 dvd players/VCR/SAT on a switch
box), and this is what I did:
* - pressed 1st btn for TV, and capped a few seconds
* - pressed 2nd btn for DVD, and papped a few seconds (& jumped to
other scenes randomly)
* - pressed 1st btn for TV, and papped a few seconds
* - pressed 2nd btn for DVD, and papped a few seconds (& jumped to
other scenes randomly)
When I played the .AVI file back, I would get:
* TV video for few seconds
* BLACK screen for few seconds
* TV video for few seconds
* BLACK screen for few seconds
That's one good reason why I hate ATI cards, but othe than that,
they're not so bad.
Now, I wouldn't recommend anyone to watch PVR captures on their
home pc, because it doesn't look so good. But, on TV, it's great
looking!!
I've just got finished burning 4 cd's this even alone!
2 were Star Trek shows "MIRI" and "Dagger of the Mind"
1 Directv Freeview's "GoGo Girls" live in Central Park
1 Voyager show - - - forgot the episode name
I played all 4 of these cd's, and I just love the quality on my 13"
TV. I can't speak for anyone else that have the PVR. Mine is the
USB version but it rocks!
Well, that was my 2 cents worth for tonight! -
yeah I got the "M-filter" it's a TBC and as a side effect it removes the macrovision but the picture that it spits back out is not as good as the original DVD video signal.
the signal I get after the TBC is alittle bit blurred and kind of "squashed" a little bit.
I"m looking for a way to get the "pure" video without a need for a midbox to mess up pciture quality -
vhelp
The Hauppauge Win-TV PVR may be ok for DVD rips (can't say haven't tried it for that) but don't go anyehwere near it for analogue camcorder use unless you like mosaics.

Warren Young has done a similar set of reviews, see
http://tangentsoft.net/video/mpeg/reviews/
but I'm certainly interested in the cards you have selected to test, expect the RealMagic which costs an absolute fortune.

I have the RealMagic DVR. No matter what driver it is very macrovision sensitive. I have heard - not witnessed - ordinary Sima style copy machines don't work. Easy fix is a non macrovision source such as settop w/o macro or old PII machine with old hollywood magic card and Zone Selector?Genie macro killer or laptop with tv out and play SmartRipped demacroed vobs.
I think the vcd capture quality sucks but the SVCD captures are superb. I capture the video to mpv for I-Author ( the only SVCD soft my Apex 600 with original secret menu firmware likes) and the audio to wav. Encode the wav to mp2 with CDEX (better than TMPEGENC's audio). Mux, author and burn with old as hell EZCD creator for the .cif that comes out of I-Author. This way never a/v sync problems. I use vfapi to virtual dub (2pass) or use flask 1 pass to encode the mpv to Divx 4.01 for my son to playback on his VAIO laptop. Cdex again for the wav to 96k mp3. Using the real time capture svcd files lets me get the rental dvd back on time and I don't have 6 -8 gigs oF vobs clogging up my drive. One major benefit to the DVR is creating a .rmp playlist. I have a three disk movie - put 1 in my dvd rom - 1 in my cdrw and one in my cd (I have a ide raid card so i can have 8 ide devices). Make a playlist start dvr station playback and get uninterupted progressive out with no intermissions. IMHO this setup makes more economic sense than a $600 burner, $10 DVD-R media and a 4.28 to 4.32 gb movie capacity when I have to degrade the 6gb+ original movie to fit 1 disc anyway.
