  1. I use Adaptec Videoh! PCI with Sonic MyDVD to capture my home VHS tapes. The card allows to capture in MPEG1 and MPEG2 format. But I would like to capture in uncompressed (raw) format. Is this possible (using this card w/ MyDVD)?

    Thanks.

  2. Unless you can configure the card to capture in another format (unlikely but check the manual) the answer is no. If you have a fast PC you can capture and convert the mpeg input on-the-fly to uncompressed but there's absolutely zero benefit in doing so. You'll get massive file size with the same quality as the mpeg.

Why would you want to do this?

capture mpeg and convert to uncompressed on the fly?
Why on earth would you do that?
The whole point is to finish with mpeg1 or 2 so if that's how you're capturing that's the best you're gonna get, unless you can capture to avi.
    As suggested, check the manual.
I'd be suprised if you can only capture to mpeg format but I don't know the card.
Cheaper cards have significant limitations I'm afraid.
    Good luck.

as it's a pci capture card, i don't think the output format has anything to do with the card, but with the software that uses the card. the card is just an A/D convertor for the video signal.

i have a cheap card (pc tv rave), but it's supported by any app that supports OLE. the parameters (codec, resolution etc) i can set depend on what software i use.

  5. I don't know the card but in the "capture cards" section it says mpeg1 and mpeg2 hardware. Normally these are converter cards, i.e. capture and convert to a defined format (your PC software has no influence here). The fact that it's a PCI card is irrelevant; PCI is just one way to connect the card to the PC.

to capture uncompressed YUV video stream requires some heavy duty hardware , ussually scsi raid or more common now , fiberchannel raid (if hdv or hd or multiple stream) ..

this is going to cost you .... but you can do it with a dps velocity or blackmagic decklink card .... and a dedicated system ..
