how to i convert an mpeg to quicktime, also what types of movie files does imovie accept?

Mpeg1s can be played by Quicktime straightaway. You can get the Mpeg2 component from Apple for about $20 in order to play Mpeg2s. Since there are many different variables for Mpeg2s I won't give you a specific program for mpeg2 conversion. Here are some possibilities: MacMPEG2Decoder or MPEG2DecX or there's Diva which is a personal favorite.
Anything that can be decoded by Quicktime can be imported into iMovie, but it natively uses DV streams.
