Sefy- You need to read a little closer. I never gave Microsoft credit for the internet. I said without them "I" and many others would not have as easy of a time to access it and that is fact. Please do not speak for me.
There is a difference between giving someone "credit" for building the Internet and giving someone credit for allowing me to access it.
After all, we all know Al Gore invented the Internet.
Say what you will, if it wasn't for MS, there would be many people who wouldn't have access to things they rely on everyday, and that does include the internet. What good is it out there if no on can use it ?

@petar, the fact that us the "little" people refuse to fight them, is what makes them stronger. Personaly, i'm doing whatever I can to not use a Microsoft at every chance, even my guide and my webpage are written by Netscape and Mozilla, and i only work for it to be compatible on them.
@jtommyj, i'm not speaking for you, but the way you said thanks to them you got Internet, it sounded as if you think they invented it. Which again i'd disagree, cause EVERY os comes with Internet Ready setup from what I can remember. Just cause everyone gets Windows with their PC doesn't mean other OS's don't have the same options.
So if those same "many" people had other OS's they would still have Internet regardless.Email me for faster replies!

So if those same "many" people had other OS's they would still have Internet regardless.
There are two things which are better, unfortunatly, one is made by a dumb company who doesn't know how to marget their OS (namely IBM) and other is made by great programmers who seem to think that if they can run it then everyone else can, so they made it completly unfriendly (Linux!) to the basic home user.
It seems to me there is an underlying current here. You seem to be very anti-MS. I'm not for them or against them, just once again stating the fact that they have made it easy for myself and others to do what we like to do and for that I'll take the bad.

@jtommyj, for those who need Word Processing and Internet, both those OS's can do great and not to mention save money (not needing to buy Office) for the customer. But will you see any store pushing it ? I doubt it, they have agreements with Microsoft (did I mention Bully Tactics earlier ?) not to sell any other OS, especialy OEM PC's.
@stiltman, Those who made them into a Monopoly are the large companies, users are "dumb" they just get the PC with whatever it's sold. And since as i've mentioned above, Microsoft made lots of agreements with OEM's, which is for example one of the lawsuits against it's licence agreements. And that is why they are in power.Email me for faster replies!

That update rollup continually locks up my duron system, so I uninstalled it and have not reinstalled. I have tried a couple of different flavors of linux, but I have found trying to install software on it a pain. My last attempt was fedora core 1. I am a college student as well(networking) I am going to have UNIX linux 2 pretty soon but I am not looking forward to it. I hope you have more fun with linux than I did. As much I hate to say it, I prefer windows.

No other elected official, to our knowledge, has made a greater contribution over a longer period of time.
Last year the Vice President made a straightforward statement on his role. He said: "During my service in the United States Congress I took the initiative in creating the Internet." We don't think, as some people have argued, that Gore intended to claim he "invented" the Internet. Moreover, there is no question in our minds that while serving as Senator, Gore's initiatives had a significant and beneficial effect on the still-evolving Internet. The fact of the matter is that Gore was talking about and promoting the Internet long before most people were listening. We feel it is timely to offer our perspective.
Transcript: Vice President Gore on CNN's 'Late Edition'
But it will emerge from my dialogue with the American people. I've traveled to every part of this country during the last six years. During my service in the United States Congress, I took the initiative in creating the Internet. I took the initiative in moving forward a whole range of initiatives that have proven to be important to our country's economic growth and environmental protection, improvements in our educational system.

@Johnny C-Note
My Gore quote was entirely tongue-in-cheek. Sorry you didn't pick up on it.
Just trying to add a little levity to a thread that got jacked from an MS update announcement to MS is responsible for everything from AIDS to famine in Africa.
I quite honestly couldn't care less who invented what or who said this or that when it comes to the internet.
And I was guaranteed by an anonymous tipster that there is absolutely no truth to the rumor that Bill Gates has the cure to cancer under lock and key but is afraid to release it because people may complain too loudly about the side effects the cure causes.
Just as long as it's up and running when I want to download some warez porn i'm happy !!
means I'm kidding for those who are uptight !!

Just put any dick in the nuclear fusion indolikaa offers and in 2 days, you have the needed mutation ...
Then, plug and play your pennis to any m$ OS. The only other thing you need, is a small online update from m$.com
Warning: Do the update at your own risk! M$ is not responsilble if you pennis stop fuction properly!

What are the three things that really got the "internet" going for ordinary people?
Firstly: World Wide Web
Secondly: E-mail (which predates WWW)
Thirdly (contestable): Instant messaging
Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but Microsoft didn't think that the internet was particularly important until quite late in the show -- until it became blatently obvious that the internet was the next "big thing". MS also really had NOTHING to do with the original inception of these three "biggies" or much with the early development of them either.
I would further claim that the update in the usage of the internet developed DESPITE Microsoft making it damn difficult to do so (e.g., with Windows 3.1 and 95).
What made the internet popular?
1. Netscape Navigator
2. A variety of non-MS e-mail clients (e.g., Eudora)
3. ICQ

Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but Microsoft didn't think that the internet was particularly important until quite late in the show
you had to post to an echo (a kind of early UUCP feed) which was
slow and anybody could read your messages. Pre AARNET I remember
logging on to Aust Beginning (a commercial hub) at the massive speed of 300 bits per second. That is about a sentence of text every 1.5 seconds.
MS made it difficult to run a TCP/IP stack using their software. They
wanted to licence large BB's to be included on a local dialup for each
country. Meanwhile smtp was finalised, early http could now be read
by newbies thanks to Lynx, and the WWW was born held by a large
backbone between major universities.
What caused the explosion of the NET? Mosaic for OS/2 & NT and smtp.

You guys are missing the point. I'm talking about ME ,MS making it easier for ME, so your points are moot about MS not thinking the internet was important. I don't care, once again, about anything except the fact they made it easier for ME.
I didn't say MS had anything to do with anything about the internet
EXCEPT allowing me to access it easier. I don't care if they didn't think it was important in 1995. I didn't have a computer then. I'm talikng about now. Give a newbie a computer with IE on it and then give them the option of using IE or searching around somehow for a disc with Netscape on it and see which one they use. That was my point. It made it easier for the newbie. Sure, once your up and running and get more computer literate you can discover the Mozilla Firebird browser or Netscape but I'm talking about people with no computer knowledge.
You don't think MS has made it easier TODAY for these people to access the internet ?
People keep changing my term ACCESS with their idea INVENT.
I am not talking about ancient history, I am stating that RIGHT NOW MS had made it easier for me, someone who didn't have a computer until 3 years ago to access the internet right out of the box when I installed XP.

So your basicly one of those who prefer to use trash because it's given to you freely, even though it's only given to you so you won't use anything else which is much better.
You for example are one of those who would complain about the problems, but would say "It's normal, that's how it should be" since that is what you are used to.
Lets alter your thinking for a second, if people had BOTH explorer and netscape on the same computer back in those days, do you really think you would be using exploder today ? I highly doubt it!
Microsoft made it "easy" for you, because they know how people think, they know once you are used to something which is given to you for free, even if it's crap and a walking disasster. you won't use anything else.
What YOU don't get is the fact, once they dominate that market and kill off the competition, YOU won't get any improvements, you want facts ? just look at IE, how long has it been since it had any new features ?
What's really the different between all Windows Os's ? just more of their other products integrated into them so you won't buy a good product from a competing company which doesn't have an OS to force it on you.Email me for faster replies!
