You will need to convert the .avi files to .mpg. I use TMGPEnc Plus.
You will need to author the .mpg to DVD (menus, chapters, etc.). I use TMGPEnc DVD Author.
You will need to burn the authored files to DVD. I use Nero.
Read the Tools, Useful Software section on the left and pick out the tools you want. Read what other people have to say about them.
Also read What is DVD at the top left and read the guides that use the software you have chosen.
Read, read, read!When you bump into a problem, come back here and ask for help.

Depends on what kind of AVI's. Start with TMPGEnc encoder and read the guides, specifically under 'Convert'. You will also have to author the resulting MPG file with a program like TMPGEnc DVD Author. If the AVI's are DIVX, then you have extra steps depending on the format.
