Someone asked me this: Is there a way to "edit" (i.e. remove parts, cut into pieces, etc...) the files created by Nero Recode? I thought they were MPEG4 (Divx) files, and suggested Virtual Dub, but was told that V-Dub can't recognize the files.
I have personally never used Recode, so I don't have a clue...
Suggestions?

It's true that they are mpeg-4 files, but in a .mp4 container which is unrecognizable by Vdub. As far as I'm aware there aren't any mp4 cutting/editing tools yet. I've come up with a work around but unfortunately it involves re-encoding to mpeg or standard mpeg-4(Divx etc.). The easiest way would be to export the mp4 as avi using Quicktime Pro. I'm not too crazy about cinepak compression so I usually use a combination of TMPGEnc, VFAPI, and Virtualdub.
Install the TMPGEnc MOV Plugin(make sure QT is installed) and open the mp4 with TMPGEnc(move the slider to "all files), adjust the settings simillar to the desired output(resolution mainly) and save your project. Add the project to VFAPI Reader and click "convert". The fake avi can then be opened by Vdub so as to convert to your desired compression. Hope this helps. -
Thanks teegee420!
I was under the impression that virtualdub could open "any" divx type encoded file...apparently not the case with Nero Recode. Any suggestions on this: http://www.geocities.com/mastersmurfie/DVDtoVideoNow2.htm
(I know I know...it's probably a lost cause...but was fun to mess around with, and has been going since January, and has approx 10 views per day...)
as to help those who use this Nero thing? Using DVDx, I have never had a problem using virtual dub and "cutting" videos into smaller pieces...
thanks again

The problem is that it's not "Divx" at all. It has a 4cc of mp4v. It's hard enough getting the things to play, let alone edit. Particularly if you don't have Nero and the mp4's were created by something other than recode. I'm only aware of 3 directshow filters that will work for playback, them being 3ivx, Mpegable and surprisingly enough the latest Koepi's build of Xvid. I've never installed Quicktime Alternative but I would imagine it's capable of decoding mp4 too.Originally Posted by mastersmurfie
I'm not exactly sure what it is you are asking me to critique. I don't really have anything to add in terms of your method, as I've never really used DVDx. I prefer the ol' dvd2avi/VFAPI Reader/Virtualdub combination. Looks like your page is helping people so that's good. Anyhow, glad to be of help.Any suggestions on this: http://www.geocities.com/mastersmurfie/DVDtoVideoNow2.htm -
sorry...should have been clearer...Originally Posted by teegee420
I was essentially looking for (possibly) better (faster) ways to convert DVD to editable AVI files...that can be used with Virtual Dub (or any other AVI editor) for this purpose. Seems to me that "dvd2avi/VFAPI Reader/Virtualdub" would take a lot longer...but as I have zero experience with dvd2avi and VFAPI Reader, I have no clue...
Thanks for your info above though...I will pass it along...
