  1. Hi everyone,

I have been using DVD Shrink 3.17; but I have some titles requiring high compression (55%) or so, and they're coming out pixelated even with Deep Analysis. I remember reading in several threads that 3.16 has less pixelation problems, but then some also have said that 3.17 is great even for high compression. So I am wondering if it's because I am using a very slow computer (PII 400)? I can't exactly afford a faster computer at the moment; and the way these discs are structured, I have to shrink instead of split if I want to keep all the working menus. Given all these circumstances, should I go back to 3.16 instead? I have never downgraded DVD Shrink before, so I don't know if re-installing an earlier version will revert the encoder as well?

Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance...

  2. same problems here. I backup anime series about 6-8 episodes per disc. never had a quality problem with 3beta5. haven't tried it again till recently with 3.1.7 and ran into heavy pixelation. Looks horrible. back to 3beta5 for me. I like the multiple window layout better anyway. you can run 3beta5 and 3.1.7 or whatever else you want on the same PC. just get the 3beta5 that is zipped in an archive instead of an installer version, even they even made an installer version of it. you can also run 2.3 alongside them as well. I use all 3 for various reasons. mainly I use 3beta5 though. The newer ones are too buggy to be alphas.

  3. I have gone back and forth to numerous versions of DVD Shrink with no interference from previous installs. I had some crashes with v3.1.7 on my last PC and had to revert to 3.1.6. I've even used ealier versions after already having had the latest version installed. The deep analysis speed seemed to only slightly improve on my PIII 1GHz with v3.1.7 over earlier releases. Not enough to make a big difference. Upgrading my PC to a P4 2.6 GHz made a significant difference, however.

Did upgrading your computer to a P4 improve the quality of the output as well as the speed of Deep Analysis?

How do you determine which version to use for which occasion?

i think at 55% compression, you should evpect pixielation

  7. Poppa_Meth, I hadn't noticed the pixellizing problems, does that happen just on medium to high compression? Animation? (I always ditch the menus these days and usually go to IC at 85% and under.)

Yeah, I still have 2.3 and 3.0beta. AutoshrinkISO with 2.3 is good in that it is basically one click and can automatically clean up files after the burn. Reauthoring multiple titles is especially convenient in 3.0beta. These are keepers.

For me, 3.1.7.5 is the fastest version yet, and the deep analysis is quick enough to leave on all the time. But I'm very interested in knowing about any flaws in this version.

I don't really have a choice. It's either splitting at some random point and the menu crashing on both the PC and stand-alone player, or keep everything on one disc. Until dual-layer burners come out, I think there will be more and more instances where high-compression will be necessary.

  9. I mainly use 3beta5 as I like its layout and it's quite stable. I use 3.1.6 and 3.1.7 in test phase right now. 2.3 is for special circumstances. I use it for example on disc I author with TDA which might come out a little too big. 3beta5 doesn't like to open tda authored discs a lot of the time, but 2.3 will run them through fine and then I can use 3beta5 on it. I haven't done much with 3.1.7 yet but what I've done has all been anime. Its all been a very dark setting which should require less bitrate but pixelizatin was horendous. I was doing I believe 67% compression so it really wasn't that a bad a compression ratio either. 3beta5 runs the exact same setup through with only minor degredation in comparision.
