  1. I am trying to convert mpeg and avi files to mpeg2. I am using Virtual Dub and TMPGEnc Plus to do this. I am using Virtualdub to extract the audio to a wav file and then using TMPGEnc to combine the original file and wav file into an mpeg2 file.

I have found that for some files the audio gets out of sync with the video. It seems to just be MPEG files with a certain codec, but I am unsure of what codec it is. I have used Gspot before to see what codec an avi file uses, but it doesn't do mpegs. Is there a similar program for mpegs?

    Thanks,

    Chris

only tmpgenc writes data to the coment section of a mpeg file -- otherwise its difficult to say which encoder did the encoding ..

i think you don't really mean mpeg2 codec

  3. I guess I should have clarified my question. If I open an avi file in Gspot it will tell me if it is XVID, DIVX, etc. Is there a program to do the same thing to MPG files, to tell me if it is XVID, DIVX, VCD, etc?

    Thanks,

    Chris

    XVID, DIVX are not mpeg2

    vcd is mpeg1

as for if its a svcd or a dvd or something else -- you just look at the resolution and bit rate and you can tell ...

Try Video ToolBox, it works well with MPG's, similar to Gspot or AVIcodec.
