I'm using Pinnacle Studio MovieBox USB version 9 to capture my VHS tapes. I keep see on this foum and others that you should capture to .avi.
How can I do this in Pinnacle Studio MovieBox USB version 9? I have looked and I don't see an option to change from mpg to avi.

Pinnacle Studio MovieBox USB version 9 is an MPEG capture, it does not capture in AVI.

Is there a program that can use the Pinnacle Studio MovieBox USB version 9 hardware that will capture in AVI.

I don't think there is. Capturing in avi is recommended if your capture device cant do a decent direct MPEG2 capture. If Pinnacle Studio MovieBox USB can do decent MPEG2 capturing why bother capturing in AVI - that will beat the purpose of MPEG2 hardware encoding (time saving encoding)
If you really want to capture in .avi then get the ADVC 100 or the
Studio MovieBox DV version9 instead.
Cheers.
