I've ordered Kill Bill Vol1 from japan for the uncensored cut, but want to edit the english subs that come with it so they only appear when japanese is spoken (it has 5.1 english audio). Then i plan to shrink and reburn it. I thought this would be easy, but for he past hour ive been testing with another dvd and it looks like i have no idea how to do this
Can anyone help?

Id think this would only be possible if the movie has 2 english subs.
1 for english subtitles and the second for english captions.
If not, it sounds unpossible. -
Okay, ive got my test dvd working, except the subs disappear a little way in which is an interesting glitch, as they should run the whole way thru. But the kill bill dvd has no closed captions, just uses subtitles. because obviously, the japanese dont need subs for their own language right? Plus the dvd has english subs.

I've never done this, but this is the approach that I would take:
Replace the proagrams I have listed with ones you have or want to use.
1) Rip the subtitle from the original with one of the subtitle ripping tools
2) rip the DVD to the hard drive, removing the subtitles(dvdshrink)
3) import the VOB into DVD-Lab 1.4 Pro beta one(allow to demux)
4) add a subtitle(the one you ripped in step 1)
5) edit out the pieces you do not want with the subtitle editor in DVD-Lab
6) compile the new project
The only thing that i did not account for is the menu. You'll probably loose the original in this process. That is, unless you can find a way to re-integrate the completed project from DVD-Lab back into the original Japanese DVD structure(replacing the original VOB/VTS with the your newly created one).
DVDShrink is free and DVD-Lab has a 30-day free trial, so other than time, you shouldn't be out anything for giving this a try.
Again, don't know if this will work, but off the top of my head this seems workable. -
andkiich how in god's name do I use the subtitle features in DVD-Lab pro? I have the full version of DVD-Lab and just recently installed the pro beta to try it out, but for the life of me I can't seem to figure out how or where to import the subtitle files. Also do you know how to convert *.sub files to something that DVD-LAB can import and use as subtitles? Thanx for any help.

Ok, i figured this out just after i started this forum so anyways, never use vobsub its useless. What you want to get is subrip, this will read ur subs then give u a srt file. In dvd lab pro just in the box which says movie 1 and lists sections for video audio 1 and audio 2 and subs, click subs then click on import and select the srt file.
Cheers! -
Thanx for the tip I did that and it worked, I have srt files that DVD-lab Pro will use. But now when I go to author the movie DVD-Lab give an error and stops. It is well known that DVD-Lab pro has a problem with it's rendering engine it is too strict and gives errors unlike the regular version of DVD-Lab. Back to square one for me.

skynet,
beta 2 is now out. I'd give that a try as there were a lot of fixes to beta 1, including the muxer. -
Did any of you have a problem with getting the subs in sync on the KILL BILL Japanese DVD? I modified the subs just fine but when I pieced it all together in DVD-Lab Pro, the subs gradually get more and more out of sync. I think this has something to do with "Frame Drop" but I'm not sure how to fix it.

I'm trying to do exactly this. No menus, movie only. Can't seem to add the subs in the movie window though. Where am I going wrong? I have dvdlab 1.4 beta 2. Can someone please tell how to do this?
Thanks-a-lot.
Sorry I've just realised I need dvdlab pro. Tried to delete this post but couldn't. Sorry! -
I think the best way to add the subs is not through an authoring progam with the video but with ifoedit which can also mean you might be able to keep the menu... I don't know exactly about kill bill but i've done about 5-6 movies till know and worked great... new subs_+ menu... i'm hoping to write a menu in a few days... it looks like a popular subject...
With all due respect... and there is respect... -
Thanks for the tip andkiich I am using beta2 and it has eliminated my compile errors. :P

I have just completed this task using dvdlab pro and am pleased with the end result, but it took quite a while.
The problems I had were...
1) The subtitles gradually went further out of sync as the movie progressed.
2) The chapters I added went further out of sync as the movie progressed.
I had to play around with the timings for the subs to get them in sync, by adjusting the times, then looking at the compiled project in ifoedit. Then going back and adjusting them til I got it right.
I got there in the end, but this took time.
I added the chapter stops on the preview window. But the stops were not where I put them when the disc was burned!
Looked at the preview window, it was telling me the stops were where I wanted them. Strange, but I just left them.
Why are the vobs created by dvdlab pro 976,6xx kb instead of 1,048,574kb made by other programs?
I'm sure there was an easier way of doing this than I did, but as I said I got there in the end, and the final result was good. -
On the same subject, I bought an imported (USA) copy of Kill Bill vol1 dvd (its just opened on teathers here...) which has 4 subtitle streams (Spanish, Chinese, Japanese, Korean). I want to reburn it with portuguese subtitles found on the net. Is that possible? Would I have to rebuild and lose the menus or can I just use IFOedit and replace any of the streams with my own? Sorry if it sounds lame, Im just starting at this dvdr thing
Thanks
Edit: This guide does exactly what I want! -
trust me, if you're still trying to do the english subtitles thing on kill bill, use Rejig. You can basically follow the 'adding subtitles' guide until you get to the part where you remux the files together, DON'T use Ifoedit for this, is doesn't like the NTSC signal for some reason I can be bothered finding out (although I'm guessing it has to do with the frames per seconds) and you end up with crazy chapters and a shorter running time whereas Rejig does it almost perfectly (and by almost I mean if you haven't spent the amount of time analysing the chapters like I have then it is perfect). Rejig remuxes in basically the same technique as Ifoedit but where in ifoedit you copy the celltimes from the original ifo you end up with 40 entries, ie 40 cell entires, you need to cut that down to 24 entries as Rejig wants the chapter times, not the cell times, but it's pretty easy to work out the chapter times from the original ifo in ifoedit. After a long week of late nites, red burning dry eyes, headaches, frustrations and nearly tears - my job is complete!
oh yeah, the subtitles are in perfect sync too.
