On my system, I have 4 hard drives and 2 DVD burners. Swapping a hard drive that was connected directly to the motherboard with the DVD-RAM drive (LG4040B) that was connected to an ATA 100 PCI adapter card did the trick. Apparently, low speed drives like CD-ROM, DVD-ROM and DVD burners cannot be connected to the adapter boards without problems, even if they use their own independent channel. So, now my Maxell 4X +R discs burn at 4X! I'm happy again...
