I'm a newbie, and just wondering when you would be able to tell you had a bad blank disc....Would nero (or whatever copying program) tell you as you tried to burn on it that there was a problem, or would you have to wait and see until you were watching the movie copy and you would notice it mess up at parts? thanks for the help!

It'll get moved, in due time...
You can find it out before the software even starts its burn. That's generally what a Power Calibration Error means. You can also have a burn fail in process.
But in my experience, you only find you when you play the disc in a DVD player. -
All of the above and then some. Using Nero's tools to check for errors, but that doesnt mean that the disc isnt watchable either.
