I have an mkv file and it can't be opened in any program, virtualdub, tmpgenc, etc.
I have browsed some of the forum topics and have been unable to find any explanation or solution that works for me. I simply want to encode or convert the mkv file to something manageable such as avi or mpg, so that I can transfer to a dvd.
Any help would be greatly appreciated
Thanks,
~Mak

Have you tried Virtualdubmod? Also, I assume you have Matroska installed.
-
Yes I've tried vitrualdubmod, it won't open the file, it says "parsing file" then it crashes. I have installed Matroska, but I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do with those files/programs?
It plays perfectly well, but I'm trying to convert/encode to a mpeg 2 so I can transfer it to a dvd, and I'm not quite sure how exactly to do that. -
If Vdubmod crashes when attempting to open there's something wrong with your file. I've never had to fix a .mkv file so I have no idea how to do so. You might want to consider downloading it again.

Exactly what is it you need to download and install? Their page is filed with all kinds of odd stuff.
I only wish to install the bare minimum required to convert it away from mkv to something standard. -
His file might still be OK.
I've been using Graphedit to remux WMV, and ASF files to Matroska cause the seek alot better in TMPGEnc. (and they don't loose the audio portion)
If i try to open one of these file in VirtualDubMod it will crash. He may have some content inside the MKV that VirtualDubMod still doesn't support.
Subtitles sometimes do it.
If you install the Matroska Splitter filter will the file play?
How bout in Media Player Classic?
Have you seen the utility called MMG.exe (Matroska Muxer GUI)?

Open your file with MMG and get rid of the stuff you know your system doesn't support. Then remux to a new file. -
Don't bother trying to use tmpenc or virtual dub for mkv. Use a tool called mkvtoolnix, and then get the GUI plugin for it. This tool extracts all the audio and video streams. Once the video stream is extracted use tmpenc to encode it. It takes a minute to extract a 30 minute video clip. The video stream is almost always AVI, so it's easy to convert in tmpenc.

What about getting the subtitles back into the video file to use with TMPGenc though? I love to watch anime in japanese like most people, but need the subtitles obviously. Right now I have everything set, but can't get the subtitles in.

We currently have no idea how this can happen, i expect that you have to go to the DVobSub ( vsfilter ) DirectShow filter settings ( can be done from any good player, like Zoomplayer, Bsplayer, TCMP or even good old WMP 6.4 ) and set it to 'always load' instead of 'load when needed' . If the subs show double, there is no other explanation than that this user has to conflicting version of DVobSub on his PC.
I know i should play with this if i find the time, but time is limited as you all know.....

Yo, check this post so see if you could make it through. There are 2 of them (mine is the second (NightScream) so try them out).
