  1. I have a Sony DRU-510a with firmware 1.0d and want to update to 1.0F. I'm following the instructions supplied by Sony. But everytime I hit "update", I get a messege "need to restart computer". So, I restart the computer, reload firmware update software, and receive "need to reboot" messege again, and again, etc . I can't get passed this point.

The reason I want to update is the following. I'm using Adobe DVD Encore to make DVDs. Burning onto Sony DVD-r media works like a charm at ??x speed. However, burning onto Imation 4x DVD-r media not going too well. After 1:30hrs of video, I get pixalation in the "movie". I tried burning at lower speeds but it seems that whatever burn speed I choose, the burner still burns at ??x speed

Maybe by updating the firmware this may solve the issue...???

Any help would be great appreciated.

I seem to have remember seeing posts about this problem a year or so ago. I don't remember the fix. Have you disabled DMA? Uninstalled packet writing software? Are you following the instructions given on the Sony Site for flashing your writer? You might wish to check them out at

I had problems until I saved the update in my program files. I saved it originally on my desktop and had the same problem but tried it from program files and I finally got it to update instead of getting the reboot everytime.

  5. Maybe you forgot to push the button to select which drive that you want to update. I know it shows up but you actually have to push the select button anyway or it won't update.

You better keep the old firmware around because Sony doesn't & you won't be able to go back to it if you don't have it.

  6. http://forum.rpc1.org/portal.php for cdr/dvdr firmwares. it keeps all the old ones.

i upgraded to the 1.0f, but had problems burning to certain disc, and some not getting the speed i selected. switched back to 1.0d, none of the problems from the 1.0f surfaced on the 1.0d. sucks, but i think that's how my burner is, yours is most likely different.

  7. Ultra911, what disc were you having problems writing on (brand, etc) and what brands have you had success with?

  8. On the Sony site when you get in the firmware dept they have a special live chat thats free so you can talk to a tech person about it for free. I did once, took a couple minutes wait & her name was Alison.
