    hey all,
I am new to dvdshrink and dvdr burning, i'm used to svcd stuff. Anyway, when using dvdshrink 3.1, my movies are coming out fullscreen in my standalone dvd player, even if the dvd is marked (and is)widescreen. The dvdr plays in my computer dvd player as widescreen though. I did an analysis of the.ifo file with chapter extractor for one of the movies, green mile.
the VTS_01_0.IFO file said the aspect ratio was 16X9, and this was where all the movie info was also kept. but there was also a file,
VTS_02_0.IFO that said it's ratio was 4X3, but didn't really have any movie info (as listed in the program chain)

anyone know the cause of my problem? any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

  2. If you "reauthor" with dvd shrink, you should see two coupies of the movie, one will be wide screen, the other SD

I think what georgepds is saying is that some DVD's contain two seperate versions of a movie: WS and pan and scan (I refuse to use the industrys "full screen" term, as it's a blatant attempt to mis-inform the public).

Sounds like you're shrinking the whole disc though, as you stated it plays wide on your computer.

Check to see if both versions are on the disc. If so, and your shrinking the whole disc, select the pan scan version and choose "still frames". If you want less compression, do a re-author and only select the WS version (you'll lose the menus though). Or use DVDRemake.

If there is only the WS version on the disc, somehow an IFO file is messed up, and you'll have to learn to use IFOEdit.

Look at the VTS_01 ifo file with IFOEDIT. Does it say 16x9,if it does double that line and check the settings in the detail screen, does it say it's 16x9? Then save the changes.

Thanks so much for the help guys. I followed up on your suggestions, and here is what i found.

-I don't think There is two versions (wide screen and full) on the dvd...at least not that i can see in dvdshrink. I especially find it doubtful cause the movie is 3 hours long, so there probably wouldn't be room for two versions on a single sided dvd.

-I checked out ifoedit, quite overwhelming for a newbie.

+video_ts.ifo, it says there are two video title sets, the 1st looks like it describes the _01 file below, and the 2nd the _02 file below that

+For the vts_01 file, it says for video: 16X9 (letterboxed)

+for vts_02 file it says under "menu attributes": 4X3 (pan-scan & letterboxed)...under "title set (movie) attributes" it says: 4X3 (not specified perm. display)

any of that make sense to any of you? I have found this to be a problem on the other 3 dvds i have burned so far too, although i can't be sure that they were supposed to be widerscreen cause i forgot to check before i returned them. Any help is very appreciated!

it's not hard to fit both widescreen and full screen on a dual layered disk.
looks like the widescreen version are contained in the vts_01_xx.vob files.

when you load the dvd into dvdshrink, make sure you're viewing titles separately.
if you click on view | uncheck combine titles (not exact verbage), you may see a title for full and widescreen.

The second title set is likely the menus, which, even for a wide screen movie, would probably be 4:3.

not seeing seperate versions (wide and full), although i don't really see how to tell if the title shown is in wide or full in dvdshrink. But, only 1 title is lister under the main movie section.

Interesting development though. I think it might be more of a player issue. I tried another, definite widescreen movie, and found same problem. I played the original dvd in the standalone (samsung s222) player, and it also was converted to 4X3, even thought it's supposed to be widescreen! SO, it seems like it might be a player problem, althought it still plays all my old svcd's in widescreen form. Anyone have any ideas why my player could be doing that? i've tried messing with all the buttons/functions and haven't found anything. Thanks again!

Most set tops have a setting on weather to play a movie letter boxed (wide) or Pan and scan. You'll have to search through the settings (easier if there is no disc in the unit).

Changing the settings when no disc was in worked! For some reason, the player had been set for a widescreen tv, so when changed to 4X3, that fixed it. thanks for all the help guys!
