Sorry to make a new post, it just feels like this is a new problem.
I used TMPG to convert a 44 minute VHS source (13.5 GB) AVI file into an MPEG that would fit on one CD.
The TMPEG settings were 480 x 576 - 2,150 bitrate - CBR - Audio,44,100, 192Khz. -layer 2 mpg.
The file size was too big to fit on a CD, so I reduced the bitrate to 1950, which fit ok. But, on all these settings Im having two major problems.
When I open the MPEG file in ATI player from Explorer, it crashes explorer every time. The file still plays, but the Audio is not in synch with the video. Its very noticeable.
Is this something Im doing wrong, or is it a common problem?
Thanks once more.

It's a common problem I think. I had this when I tried using encoding to mpg and mpa. I switched to m2v and wav (and later ac3) and the audio is spot on.
I had tried adding a delay to the audio but found that on my player it would be so many milliseconds out one way and on someone elses it would be a different amount the other. PCM (wav) was the only way I could find to make it reliable for all players.
Sorry, not much more I can add... -
Thanks for the reply. Ok, how do I extract the WAV audio track from the AVI file do you know? And then how do i put them both together again??
I have Cool Edit Pro, should I use that? Or is there a program that people in here are familiar with?
Greatly appreciated, Im determined to crack this.

I'm not sure how you could do this. I'm assuming you want to end up with a single .mpg file? I don't know if you can even have an mpg file that has pcm audio embeded instead of mpa.
There are probably some tools out there that will help, but I've no more advice to help. I've only been intersted in getting my DVD files to play with audio sync. Sorry..
Hope you get it sorted -
Thanks Cirrus.
I tried extracting the PCM WAV from the video file in Cool Edit Pro, which worked, but when I imported the VID and AUDIO files for Muxing in TMPEnc, they were still out of synch afterwards.
I have tried re-capping the video in MMC with custom settings of 480x576, at 1970 bitrate, CBR, but when I try to import the file into Nero again it says the "stream encoding is invalid for SVCD" because MMC has set the frame rate at 29. instead of 25. Thing is i can`t find where to change the freame rate setting in MMC.
SO, Im stuck between not being able to solve the Audio synch problem in TMPGEnc, and not being able to create a correct custom setting in MMC.
I`m sure im giving myself more problems than i really need. If it`s a simple thing I`m missing, Id appreciate the answer -
you can use tmpgenc to adjust the audio sync problem. go to setting then on the advance tab, double click on souce...you should see your video in a display window. this is where you can just encode a small portion of your vid or do the whole thing, what ever you like. you should see a small box near the bottom that say audio gap it will have a value of 0. adjust the gap +/- depending how you audio is out of sync. use increments of 250 msec +/- and encode a small test sample till you find the right setting.

The frame rate in MMC depends on weither you select PAL or NTSC.
I'm surprised you can even select 480x576 in MMC if you're using NTSC frame rate. What version of MMC are you using ? -
thanks Jeep and Sulik

I installed the MPEG codec for TMPGEnc and followed the instructions for install, but TMPEnc will still not re-code MPEG files made by MMC.
The "codec" seems to be a self-executing program (called "mamora"?) in that allows me to open an MPEG file, but little else.
I have been experimenting with MainconceptEncoder which at least will open the MPEG files, which is a start. The "details" tab allows me to set custom bitrates, and as my purpose is to fit 44 minutes of VHS onto a single 80 min SVCD, I am not sure what my MAX, Average and Minimum bitrates should be for that. I tried :
VBR:
max = 2,200
average = 2000
min= 794
the result was a 712 MB file that fit and opened OK in Nero, but it was very "blocky"...i made those bitrate choices at random.

I just realised that your post about adjusting the audio synch settings in TMPGEnc can apply to the AVI file, of course, I don`t need to import MPEG.
Mainconcept encoded a lot faster than TMPG but TMPG always seems to give better results, not so much blockiness. But the audio synch thing is a big problem. It seems a bit tedious and time consuming to have to do trial and error synch corrections with the +/- settings just to get the audio and video to match up when encoding an aVi file which had them matched up fine.
Any TMPEnc developers reading this? Please, try to get your heads around this one. We need you to solve it!!
