In those cases you must have asked decent questions or shown that you have tried things your self.
What I think we are discussing here is the type of newbie (and this isn't always obvious from post count or length of membership either!) that posts question showing a complete lack of any attempt to find information by themselves. Information that is easily found with minimum effort in most case. And of course those that, when helped, refuse to accept or even try the advice given. Those kind of posters are the ones that frequently get flamed. And though you will not often find me amongst the flamers, you will find plenty of posts from em where I say 'read the guides', or 'help us to help you by doing some basic research' or words to that effect. Thats just my way of handling these things, others prefer a more direct approach. In my mind both are equally valid as long as you don't go too far.

Like many (most) I refuse to spoon feed people, and those that expect frequently get what they deserve.

  4. I've been on this site forever since .. 199x LOL

as usual I can see the LOVE here. LOL

I usually went straight to the guides. Spent days reading then tried stuff.

    And woot it worked! LOL

I'm old skool. All my teachers said. "look it up" "read it" then ask me a question. LOL

Now a days. The teacher doesn't say that because they know the kid can't READ. =D

I told one guy I know. REad a guide . he was lazy. and impatient.
So I said.. get a program that will rip for you ie x-copy .

He was happy. Now crying because dvd-xcopy went under.

He has no idea what to do. hehehe

It took him 2 months to get xcopy to burn on his .50 dvd media.
his media looked like it was made in a garage behind a dumpster in Hallville.

I'm pretty sure I even have the printed guide still somewhere on my desk. I also have a B.S in I.T., been a software developer for 10 years, have 8 years experience in professional video editing systems (both linear and non-linear), yada, yada, yada... I tell you this just so those about to flame know where I am coming from.

I have noticed a disturbing trend in this site since I first accidentally tripped over it over a year ago. That trend is for a couple of "key" people to come completely uncorked over the first newbie post of someone who (obviously) hasn't..... read the guides, done a search, posted their specs, typed clearly and in plain english (even though many members/posters are clearly not in english speaking countries), or somehow otherwise offended the superior morality of these few.

Yesterday, I decided to list all posts of one of these "key" individuals, and quickly learned that in their last 40-some-odd posts, never did provide one useful bit of information to the original poster, but did thoroughly attack them. While I enjoy the occasional flame war, and sometimes chuckle in my sleep over some of the obvious BS answers given here. I cringe when I see one of the newbies post something that deserves some of what they are about to get. Don't
most people deserve at least one chance? Hey, if given a link to the guides, the poster comes back with something stupid, or lazy, or is unwilling to try, then let the flaming begin. Again, I am not a prude or a hard-ass. Some of my favorite posts here have been about how Blockbuster can tell if you've copied a DVD, new DVD formats like DVD* or DVD / or DVD$, microwaving DVDs, and of course, the midget clown porn.

At the same time however, many of the instant slams to first-time posters, especially the verbal abuse attacks, should be grounds for formal warnings, even to the longstanding members, and the apparent post whores. I would truly hate to see this site degrade from the ultimate source of information it has always been.

In the words of Dennis Miller..."Just my opinion.....I could be wrong".

P.S. - Other than to my wife and child, I have absolutely NO feelings whatsoever, so flame away if you feel you must.
@Tekkieman - Any chance of a retrospective on this ?
    If in doubt, Google it.

Sure. In retrospect, I was, and still am, correct. My opinion really hasn't changed. I myself have gone from being a lurker to being an OT semi-regular ( or is that irregular?), and I still enjoy reading the weird posts, but outside of OT, the line between humor and bad behaviour has been pole vaulted over many times.

I can be as brutal and foul-mouthed as any of the people I was talking about in my first post, the difference is that I confine it to OT.

Note how many people have left, changed user names, or no longer venture outside of OT for many of these same reasons, or worse, cried foul when someone actually fought back.

I do not venture out of OT much now. I might go to the computer forum on occasion, and so I really don't see this much now, but I stand by my original post.

Is this the new word association ?

I meant agoraphobia as in tekkieman's fear of going outside OT. That Simpsons episode where Marge suffers from it was on the other night
    If in doubt, Google it.

More often than not, I fear going in to OT. But I will admit, I had to look up agoraphobia, which is why I added Hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia - fear of big words.

I share your viewpoint. Mainly, I frequent the computer forum and the OT.

I used to try and help in other areas but got caught up in many flame wars myself.

Besides computers, my other area of expertise is in video encoding, but I rarely go outside of OT anymore because of the aggravation of arguing with people.

I changed names because I wanted to get away from the angry monkey.

In retrospect, I realized it is not worth the hassle and aggravation to get upset anymore. It accomplishes nothing and life is too short.

Why can't we all just get along?

Not to criticise but I find it odd that some get all upset, aggravated, and angry over a disagreement in an online setting, over things that don't mean anything.

Newbie: What's the best shrinking program
    expert 1 - DVD shrink
expert 2 - DVD shrink sucks, use IC8
expert 1 - IC8 sucks, **** you, DVD shrink is the best

Now I know I do participate in the flaming but get upset about it??

I used to think of it as someone challenging me and saying I am a dumba**.

That is why I used to get upset, but as I said earlier, life is short.

To be honest Gitreel, I think my personality, my job and being coach allows me to just let it go. I'm sure you can see how what I do kind of lends itself to dealing with this type of behavior without getting overly concerned with it.

First thing grasshopper, you have to learn how to truely care for people. Not the generic socially acceptable "care" or the politically correct "care". I mean to like people.

Only through caring can one truely learn how to develop distain, resentment, to ignore and to hate your fellow man effectively.

With practice, you will learn to not be prejuidice and to hate everyone equally.

    This is step one.
