Dr. Divx can convert to avi. This can also be done with freeware tools but it's a little complicated. TMPGEnc and Canopus Procoder, Mainconcept MPEG Encoder and TMPGEnc can all convert WMV to mpeg. Just make sure Windows Meida Player is updated to version 9.

The virtualdub your thinking about is version 1.3c ... discontinued.

Microsoft ... said no no no .... cant do that to our video format.

It is someplace on the Internet but wont do much good ... wont work on the latest WMV videos being created these days.

Try Intervideo WinDVD Creator 2 ... it works great for converting WMV videos ...

Send me a PM message if your interested in trying Intervideo WinDVD Creator 2. I've got a really good guide already fixed up .... but too big for placing here. Plus ... I've got to get to work.
