I'm newbie and I made a dvd using tpmgenc, the movie was composed with 2 avi files. Now I want to make the inverse conversion to retrieve the two original avi files because I found subtitles. How can I do it. I tried virtualdub but there are more vob files than the 2 avi I had.

    duhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Dude you converted AVI to MPEG-2 DVD spec

    Your AVI is GONE ...

For best quality you can rip the DVD and extract the MPEG-2 VIDEO and the AUDIO (which can be PCM WAV, MPA/MP2 or AC-3 depending on what you used).

So do that then re-author using SELECTABLE SUBTITLES

This way you will not loose any quality.

If you want to burn-in the subs then you will be re-encoding your files a second time (AVI --> MPEG-2 ---> MPEG-2)

Thus there will be a loss in quality.

Use DVD Decrypter to rip the movie in IFO MODE and do STREAM PROCESSING.

If done correctly you will get 2 files. A video file (with a M2V extention) and an audio file (which will be WAV, MPA/MP2 or AC3)

Then re-author it with the subtitles using IfoEdit

You will also probably need something like SUBTITLE WORKSHOP to make sure the subs are in a format that IfoEdit can use.

The end result will be a no frills DVD that has no menus but it will have subtitles and it will be easy to do and you will not loose any quality in the image/sound department.

Well the problem with subtitles is that very few DVD authoring programs support optional subtitles.

You usually have to spend an arm and a leg to get a DVD authoring program that does support optional subtitles.

IfoEdit is freeware and supports subtitles but no menus.

There is another freeware DVD authoring program that I haven't tried yet called dvdauthor 0.6 and there is a gui for it called DVDAuthorgui ... look in the TOOLS section under the DVD Author section.

This is a freeware program that can do subtitles and menus.

So that would be a free alternative to IfoEdit.
