Newbie posting guides

Is there a guide or section that lists out shortcuts and techniques for posting? Things like how to quote so that it shows the persons name (which I've only recently learned when somebody made a mistake doing it and I figured it out), or creating hyperlinks attached to a word rather than the whole url? Maybe there has been a good thread in the past.
I've searched the site and either just plain missed it or its so obvious I can't see it. Maybe these things are inherent in sites such as these or IRC, but this is the only forum I frequent.

To make URL links you can either use the URL buttons or type them manually. The code should look like this:

Which will look like this in your post: IMDB
