Have accumulated 14 blank DVD+R's which would not initialize or begin formatting using Nero 6.3.16 to burn as DVD Videos. All are Memorex CMC MAG 01's. I normally toss out all DVD coasters but these never even initialized. They all stayed at 1% and nothing happened when I "burnt compilation."

    DVD Info shows on all:

    Region information N/A not a DVD-VIDEO
Media code/Manufacturer ID CMC MAG F01
    Format Capacity Not Formatted
    Free Blocks 405405696
    Free Capacity 4.38GB(4.70GB)
    Book Type DVD+R
    Media Type DVD+R
Media Id Code Speed 2.4x 3324KBps
Available Write Descriptor CLV 4.0x 5540KBps
Available Write Descriptor CLV 2.4x 3324KBps
    Data area starting sector 30000h
    Linear Density 0.267um/bit
    Track Density 0.74um/track
    Number of Layers 1

    And Arrowkey DVD Inspector shows:

    Table of Contents
There are a total of 1 tracks on disc, plus the lead-out.
Disc is a DVD, type is Playable in region(s)
    This disc has 1 layers.
Blank disc with 2295104 free blocks

Before I throw these bad CMC disks out, since they show they are allegedly still unformatted or burned, there any program I could use to try and salvage these 14 disks?

Is this a case there crappy CMC just did not mfg them properly to allow lead in to be written? Thanks for any help.

I believe CMC is on Lordsmurf's "Bad" media list. There's no telling what went wrong with the burn. I've gtotten about six different failure modes when cheap media is used and it fails to burn.

Aren't Memorex CMC +R discs supposed to be better than Memorex CMC -R?

Yep, you're right. I missed that when I skimmed it.

The only good Memorex +R media I've used are ones that came in Jewel Cases. The one's in DVD Cases have been absolutely the worst DVDR's I've used. They were +R CMC which pretty much explains all. I've always had bad luck with spindled Memorex +R's. I've had mixed results with Memorex -R's. I'm on a roll with my latest spindle. So far I've had 26 straight good burns out of a 50pk (Prodisc). The previous spindle I bought, they were absolute crap. They also were Prodisc. I burned 5 bad one's out of 6. That's when I gave up and went back to Best Buy to exchange them. I had thrown out 5 of the discs, so I only had 45 to bring back. Would you believe they actually counted the discs and took out 5 out of my new pack. What a bunch of sticklers!!!

Was a ring burned? If so, toss them.

Thanks all. Guess we all share bad experience with CMC. Two of these were from a 25 pack Memorex from Amazon, and 12 were from a 50 pack Memorex I just got from Amazon.

I did pay $1.45 each for Taiyo Yuden at Rima, but then stupidly went cheap for 50 Memorex for $49.99 this month. I had my fingers crossed that I might again get RICOHJPNR01 Memorex.

Like Lord Smurf often says, cheap is no bargain when you get so many coasters. I still don't understand what went wrong as physical inspection shows no burned ring whatsoever on all 14 discs.

Lord Smurf, do you think some CMC's are so bad the laser cannot even get a start to initialize the discs?

If data is written in the area outside the wobble groove, then it would show no errors with naked eyes, but the data is not on the disc where it needs to be.

CMC has HORRIBLE balancing issues, as well as HORRIBLE dye thinnning problems.

You can buy RITEKG03 or RICOH or PRODISC for under $1 in bulks of 50 or more online. Great price for normally pretty good media (though not perfect). I buy all 1ST and 2ND class media.

The CMC +R are better than CMC -R, but think like this: you want round wheels for your car. Often (not ALWAYS, but OFTEN), the -R are square and the +R are oval. Comparing junk to not-quite-junk.

I can easily see how the dye possibly was not spread evenly on the surface of these two CMC batches.

When I unsealed these cakeboxs, it looked like they were mfg sloppily. I could see the outer rims of these spindles were irregular. Sitting all together in the cakebox, the rims looked exactly like real cake frosting. Instead of cleanly "shaved" or cut rims/edges I could see either too much, or too little plastic or goo .

Guess I should be happy I got as many burnable disc's as I did.
