So my 120 gig drive (8 month old maxtor) fatally died. Tried hooking the drive up as a secondary in another computer and it was unreadable. even tried running dos and manualy transfering files but they are unreadable. Some of this drive is backed up (by norton ghost which I don't know how to use very well yet). I have a second computer that has plenty of problems. I pretty much abandoned it and moved all the equipment to the new computer. The only version of nero that I have won't do dvd (on that computer or on disk). I upgraded online. Xp will not boot with the bad drive installed so I am forced to use 98. I have nti cd maker on disk which claims to do dvd, but just found out it won't recognise my liteon. All I need is a downloadable (preferably small) program that can burn data dvd's (got the burner installed already). I have looked through the tool list but am not sure what is small and easy to use. Once I have recovered my system, I'll go back to what I was using so I just need it one time use on a win98 install that is not really setup right (I only used it for gaming when I used the old computer).
I promise I will setup my system corectlly with proper automatic backups etc. if someone can help. I know I said that last time it fatally crashed, but I am going to get another 120gig and a controler card so I can run more drives this time. I'll use the new 120 as main and the old 120 (as soon as I can get it replaced under waranty) purelly as backup (for the other 120, a 80, 40 and 20). Might as well use all my drives as the new controler will allow it. I know, I could just download a trial of nero (what I am use to using), but have you see the size of it (dialup). I have had to try downloading several times in the past to get it to complete.
Please help?

Sorry, almost all of the burning programs (suites ?) are going to be huge for dial-up. Burn4Free is small but I understand it contains other questionable software (ie: spyware ?). Might be OK to use it once and then remove it.
One thing you might want to consider on hooking up all your drives. Heat and power. I think the controller card is a good idea, just not sure hooking up 5 hard drives isn't going to cause you other problems. -
I planned on booting from a good hard drive with the bad hard drive hooked up to to try to recover the files. I wound up downloading a trial of copytodvd (before I saw your post). I got it working but I think that the hard drive is a wash. The only recovery that seemed to work claimed an estimated time of aprox. 17500 hours. I let it run for several hours writing down the progress and it really was running that slow (and that was only for one partition). Obviouslly I cannot let it run for two years. The drive is now starting to show errors during bootup and bios generated messages to backup and replace the drive (wish I would have got these messages a week ago before it fried). The good news is that three of the four partitions didn't contain anything unreplacable (though one folder had lots of downloaded stuff that will be a pain to get again with dial up). Mostly captures and dvd rips that I had not burned yet so those are mostlly replacable. The one partition that had a LOT of unreplacable stuff is the one that I did a ghost backup of. They are a moth or two old but hopefully most of the stuff is there. Now I just hope that the burns are good (six dvd+rw). I never even checked them out. I thing the drive is totally gone now.
Thanks for the advice and recomendations though! Does anybody know any good online tutorials etc. for norton ghost? I have ghost and retrospect but I was thinking of using ghost on a regular basis from now on.
