  1. I am in need of a way to convert an old ASF file of a Dave Matthews Band concert (it's not copyrighted or anything, don't worry) to an MPEG file to make a VCD out of it. Nothing in the FAQs or How To's work. Please help!

  2. The only ASF converter I know of is TMPGENC version 1.3c and earlier. Following that version, Microsoft forced them to remove ASF support.
Email me at apguillon@hotmail.com if you want more details.

  3. I've converted an ASF to an AVI with the Virtual Dub program (I think there a link to it on the site somewhere) but when I went to convert the AVI to an MPG using TMPGEnc it made a really big file. Worth a try though I guess because it did work, just made a really big one.

    OR why not direct:

Once you open this asf file check direct stream copy for both video and audio and then save it as AVI file. Then convert it to mpeg. The only problem could be mpg4c32.dll. virtualdub will tell ya this when you attempt to save the avi file.

  7. Armageddon, thanks!

When I try to open the ASF in virtualdub, i get this:
"ASF: parse error -- too many segments in packet at a672 (2 expected) packed size = edb, send time: 26:00:32:23"
    ideas?

Phew! It looks like the file could be damaged in some way.

    Maybe incomplete download?

Then I think the older version of Tmpgenc is needed.

Look arround maybe on kazaa or something.

The one I use for everything is 12a.

I can maybe put it up on kazaa or something.

    A!

Look for file called dvd2vcd.rar (or just dvd2vcd) on kazaa. It's a dvd galaxy rip pack that I downloaded and still use for most of my work. Old Tmpgenc version is there 12a. Keep the virtual dub 13c as well.

    It should come up.

    A!

You have it mixed up. For VirtualDub 1.3c and before] supports ASF. After v1.3c it got removed due to Microsoft copyright issues.

TMPGEnc always supported ASF and can convert it to any MPEG-1/MPEG-2 format.

All of the responses so far have not been quite correct...and since rowLightWeight has reported the same Virtual Dub error that I too received (and have overcome), I can safely say that I have the answer for him.

I'm not a guru, I just followed the guide available here on VCDHelp.

Here is an overview of the steps:
    1. Download dBpowerAMP Music Converter
    2. Download WMA plug-in for dBpowerAMP
    3. Start dBpowerAMP and load the ASF
    4. Save to .WAV
    5. Start TMPGENC.
    6. For the VIDEO: load the ASF
    7. For the AUDIO: load the WAV
    8. MAke sure to load the desired TMPGENC template, eg. VideoCD, etc.
    9. select START

    That's it!

You probably need ASFCUT, a tiny command-line utility that "fixes" ASFs. Most of the ASFs I've D/L'd with asfrecorder needed this step. VirtualDub was just fine with it once I had used the ASFCUT utility.

GoldenAxe has a link to the file on his site (see above).
