if I have a quality capture card and I capture with preview and overlay turned off, do I need a good video card? or will it nt make a difference?
I have a osprey 200 video capture card, but a cheap vga card.

What video card you are using has no bearing whatsoever on the quality of video you capture through your capture card (assuming of course they are 2 separate devices).
Factors that have an impact: overall speed of your system, amount of ram, burst transfer rates of your hard disk (dma support). This will basically ensure that the pipeline is big enuff for the input you plan. Of course on a borderline system, turning off preview would improve the number of dropped frames slightly. Cheers
