When ever I click on a link in an explorer window, a second window opens and attempts to load but there is nothing in the address space. If I click Stop and then click Refresh the window will load properly. What could be causing the second instance of IE not to load. I also get a lot of Page Not Found errors. I have just recently reinstalled Windows 98se and updated IE to latest. Any help appreciated.

Make sure in IE / Tools / Advanced that "Reuse windows for launching shortcuts" is checked. Also "Always send URL's as UTF-8" should be checked.
Other than that, I can't think of anything. Are you running Active Desktop in 98SE or are you using Classic Desktop. When you say you click on a link in "explorer" do you mean WIndows Explorer or Internet Explorer. -
Thanks for the reply,
I checked on those two things and they are checked. I am referring to Internet Explorer. -
Could be any number of things but since you reloaded Windows I suspect it's in your TCP/IP settings (DNS, WNS, LMHosts lookup). I don't have Win98 (I have XP) so it's difficult to walk you through anything. Do you have broadband (cable modem or DSL) or are you on dialup.
Perhaps one of the Win98SE users could jump in and help out. -
I have a cable modem. I checked the network settings and found the DNS disabled as well as the WINS. I don't know what that means though. Thanks again for your help.

In an XP system:
You should obtain DNS server address automatically
Enable LMHOSTS Lookup
Register this connections address in DNS
Append Primary and connection specific in DNS
I would write down your TCP/IP adapter settings (just in case) and try the above one at a time. Some of the wording maybe different in WIN98. Or if you have a friend running a cable modem and WIN98, look at his settings. Your cable company may have proper settings on their website for each operating system also.
Let me know what you find out. There's always a solution. -
Ok, I got ahold of my cable company and they helped me fix the Page Not Found problem. Now if I could only figure out why the second window won't load I'd be all set. I have run Spybot and don't have anything running that I am aware of. It's almost like a pop-up blocker. Do you think my DivX Pro Codec Adware could be causing a problem? Redirecting?

It's possible I suppose. It sounds like a popup stopper. You might try looking at your browser extensions to see if anything is attached to IE that could be causing it. Here's a free program for managing them. Haven't tried it myself but will today. It looks like a worthwhile tool.
