The usual cause of this error is using 4x media in a 2x writer. Alternatively, it might just be bad media.

From the Pioneer site: "DVD-R and DVD-RW disks themselves have information written on them, within this Media ID code there is information that the drive uses to calibrate itself to the disk, when a drive first starts to write to a disk it will burn a small amount of data to a calibration area on the disc, using the calibration information in the Media ID code, and then try to read back the data that it has written. If it cannot be read, then disk will be ejected and fail with a power calibration error.

A power calibration error is normally caused by problems with the media. Should you be experiencing problems with your drive or the media, we recommend that a disk from a good quality manufacturer be used to test it."
Just to add, if you get power calibration error all the time with all media, you may have a dirty laser lens or a failing burner.

It's recently been happening with my Pioneer 105, been using Ritek 04's and writing at 4x. Started writing at 2x and I haven't had the problem since, it's not ideal but at least I don't get anymore coasters. I read on the 'net that it's a problem with the hacked firmware but i've burned loads of discs at 4x with no probs before, going to upgrade soon so i'm not too arsed tbh.
