  1. I am using a small clip for output testing, and with mpeg4, the output smears motion. Mpeg4 version 1 and 2. Others don't do that (like huffyuv and making animated gifs).

What could be causing this problem? reinstall Premiere? reinstall the mpeg4 codec? Is that even possible?

    Thanks!

Why are you outputting as mpeg-4? The reason why Huffyuv looks better is because it uses considerably less compression than mpeg-4.

  4. When I say it's smearing, I really mean it. It's serious, not just some artifacts here and there.

The first second or so (since there isn't much movement in that span) is clear, but as soon as the person moves, he leaves major trails behind of himself. It looks really bad, pretty much unusable.

I'm outputting to mpeg-4 just because I'm testing the software out. I figure I should be able to do it even in mpeg-4.

What is your source frame rate, and what frame rate are you outputting? If your source is film 23.976fps and you are outputting to 29.97, that would account for the smearing. Ultimately, you are better off exporting as Huffyuv and re-encoding to the mpeg-4 codec of your choice with multiple passes. You'll get better quality that way.

  6. The source is DV from a D8/Hi8 player, playing 8 and Hi8 tapes. Whatever the framerate is from that DV source, I assume 30 or so, but I can check when I get home tonight. I think I was outputting to 30fps.

I tried taking a screenshot, but somehow that jsut doesn't work. Maybe l literally can take a digital photo of my screen, because otherwise I don't know how to do it. I went into photoshop, and where the image on the player should have been was just black...

Is it possible to do a screen shot of a paused video?

    You're probably right. I'll bet it's 29.97 or so.

If you're using Windows Media Player, try playing a different movie first, then at the same time open the avi in question. I'm not very familiar with Premiere but what are your output settings such as codec, bitrate etc. ? I think the problem might be in there somewhere.
