  1. Ok, I want to get this over with. I am into Digital Video and im making a skateboarding video. The camera i have is a Sony DCR-TRV320. It is Digital8 but not MiniDV,so the quality is good not superb, which I knew it would be. My capture equipment is firewire, no capture card or hardware. Now, I have tryed Adobe Premiere 6 and Ulead VideoStudio 5. The quality of the tape looks good but when i capture it to the pc, it seems like it could be better. That's what I wonder, if I get a hardware capture card like ADS Pyro or something like Dazzle i heard you can change bitrate and stuff resulting in better quality. That's what i want to know, should I get hardware for this stuff or keep JUST my firewire. Also, if I get a better video cassette would that help? Right now i have HMP and I now theres HME which Sony says has 70% video quality. Also, in Premiere when I encode it to say AVI or MPEG, the final results stutter or cause the system to hang briefly then play the track. But Ulead plays encoded files fine but the program isn't as powerful as Adobe Premiere 6. Well this seems like a lot but there has to be a DV mastermind out there Thanks.

first off, not a 'mastermind'...just thought I'd help.

There's really nothing you can do about the AVI you transferred to your PC. DV AVI is fixed (res, comp., audio rate etc). And the firewire card simply provides you with the 'easiest' and probably simplest way of transferring your video to hard drive. I'd say you stick it out with your firewire card...it won't get any better.

Stutter in Premiere...I've actually read a lot of those... and most of them switched to an earlier version. But then, some would say they don't get those problems in their setup (lucky guys)... quite frankly, I'd prefer MediaStudio Pro...easier to use, and as powerful. You might want to consider this software also.

No clue about your question on tapes.

    hope this helps.

  3. I also find media pro easier to use, but premiere has one excellent feature that makes me use it, plugins. I use the avisynth plugin along with CCE to make SVCDs that are indistinguishable from the original DV.

Apparently, ulead hasn't released a SDK for plugins for their program.

  4. that's one of the reasonms i love Premiere, plugins. The reason it stutters is probably because of my setup only 128MB of RAM, 600mhz Athlon. I'll give MediaStudio Pro a go! Is any one familar with HMP and HME tapes and knows the differences in quality? Thanks for the help

  5. I highy doubt the "stutter" problem is related to your computer speed. But I also don't know what the fix is.

Stick with the firewire, it's not going to get any better than that. The tapes HMP and HME. If i'm not mistaken, me tapes do give you a bit more quality but mp tapes are more durable. So its sort of a trade off, however I never really noticed any differnce while using a HI-8. I dont' think it should matter much in your D8. If you really want to try it, you should but don't expect anything differnt. Your better off cleaning your video heads once in a while.

ME stands for Metal evaporated and MP stands for metal particle.
