Well the first one starts out with the zombie phenomena JUST starting out. The second one starts with when the shit is hitting the fan and the third one starts out with what is possibly the last group of humans alive.Originally Posted by pcexpress-guy
It's a definate progression but each film has it's own set of characters and none carry over from one to the other.
So you could skip the first one if you wanted too I suppose but if you can find it to rent it is still worth seeing.
However due to the first film being considered public domain most home video versions look like shit ... the one I linked too on AMAZON.COM is the one to get as it was remastered from the original camera negative with Romero overseeing it etc.

pcexpress-guy --you might as well watch them all…just do it at your leisure, you have no deadline do you?
Since we've digressed onto the subject, I will indulge without guilt:
I would have to say DOTD (1979) was the best horror movie I've ever seen. I don't know how to explain why…for me, it started from the very first scene and lasted to the end. I left the movie deeply affected and feeling like I had lived through the most unimaginable nightmare that could ever become reality. The characters, the plot, the effects, the horror, the social significance…everything made this move the classic it is. I've seen the MTV-oriented "remake", and read viewers reviews on amazon.com…what's even scarier than the original movie is the praise this empty and putrid remake is getting. It's a sad statement of what the public has to come to expect in the way of quality.
I've seen "Last Man….", wasn't crazy about it…however, "The Omega Man" was one of my favorites growing up.
Though not Romero, I highly recommend "The Evil Dead"…I found it creepier than DOTD, just because it had all the elements of classic horror (kids alone in an old cabin in a remote area).
And to add my last two cents worth, the scariest piece of film I've ever seen (but of course it was as a kid but is still effective) was "A Drop of Water" (part of the BLACK SABBATH trilogy).
John…is this new DVD release of DOTD any better than the last two Anchor Bay releases? I also have an import DVD, which gives me a count of three. Also, there was rumored to have been a very long (156 minute?) version of this movie…any truth to that?
And is the NOTLD version you reference the same as Elite's original packaging (with Kyra Schon)?
SORRY FOR GETTING OFF THE TOPIC (before I get yelled at).

The first Anchor Bay DVD release was the so-called director's cut which runs something like 140 minutes give or take. First of all this is NOT a director's cut. Romero has said as much. This was a "rushed" edit he made for the Cannes film festival back when he was editing the movie. He made further edits after that to derive his true director's cut which is the 126 minute version ... the version that got released here in the states.
Anyways the director's cut is interesting because it does feature more footage and that is a good thing but overall I have always preferred the theatrical 126 minute cut.
The Anchor Bay DVD of the "director's cut" was very bright (too bright) and not mastered very well.
The second Anchor Bay release was the 126 minute theatrical version and the quality was much better than the first DVD but they screwed up in that this version is LONGER than 126 minutes as it includes snippits of dialog and scenes that should NOT be in the theatrcial cut. So this is pretty much a botched release.
This brings us to the new Anchor Bay "DiviMax" release which was again remastered and is the complete (no less no more) 126 minute theatrical version that Romero approves. The image and sound quality are excellent and well beyond the other two DVD releases by Anchor Bay. At a MSRP of $19.99 it is hard to pass up especially since most places are selling it for $15.00 or less.
However ... Anchor Bay "rushed" this out (it just came out March 9, 2004) to capitalize on the remake comming out.
Anchor Bay is releasing a BOX SET late this year. This box set will include the 126 minute theatrical cut (the exact same DVD that they just released) along with 2 other discs ... one will feature a newly remastered "director's cut" version and the other will feature the 3rd main varient of this film ... the European cut edited by Dario Argento (the shortest cut of the film but features footage not in the other two). There is expected to be a 4th disc of extras as well. Full details are not yet available on this box set although as I said it is expected out this fall.
So you might want to wait for that. I will get it myself but couldn't pass up getting the newly remastered theatrical cut NOW especially since I only paid $11.99 for it at BEST BUY the week it came out. DAWN OF THE DEAD is not just my favorite horror movie but my favorite movie period.
As for NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD ...
The version I linked to is the so-called MILLENNIUM EDITION which is the 2nd DVD release of this film by ELITE ENTAINMENT. They used the exact same VIDEO and AUDIO files as on the first release (the one with Kyra Schon cover aka zombie child) but the MILLENNIUM EDITION also adds a 5.1 DD track as well as the MONO DD track from the first release. The second release also has a better selection of extras compared to the first release. The only reason to get it is to have the extra extras.
As for the 156 minute version of DAWN OF THE DEAD ... yes it does exist but is a "bastard" version. Basically someone took the director's cut (which has everything in the theatrical cut and then some) and edited in the footage that is exclusive to the Argento cut to get one long version that has EVERYTHING in it. Only problem is the music is different in all three so how do you decide what to use with one massive edit? Also the only DVD release of this 156 minute version are various German and Dutch DVD releases which are in German with no English subtitles.

P.S.
I too did not like the remake at all ... in fact it sucked donkey balls!
I just rented the TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE DVD as I missed that in theatres and although a better remake than the DOTD remake I still wasn't very happy with it overall although that guy from FULL METAL JACKET/MAIL CALL was great in it."The eyes are the first thing that you have to destroy ... because they have seen too many bad things" - Lucio Fulci

have no guilt. if someone wants to go back on topic, that will be fine.
The only question I have about wav to ac3 is with regards to the plugin and sound forge. Can you just buy a license number to make this plugin work, or is it a seperate piece of software to be installed?
This zombie stuff is interesting. Interesting, because who would have thought the subject would create interest, like it does?
Thanks!pcexpress-guy

I forgot to add that THE LAST MAN ON EARTH is one of those public domain titles so most video versions look shitty but there is a very nice widescreen version on DVD ... the label is called MADACY HOME VIDEO.
I just recently saw the movie (via this DVD) and I did like it but not my favorite Vincent Price film. It's not a perfect film but it is still good and actually follows the plot of I AM LEGEND much more closely than THE OMEGA MAN.
However I must admit that I absolutely love THE OMEGA MAN probably because I saw it on TV as a kid.
I have the widescreen LD and it totally kicks ass. Anyone can now enjoy it widescreen on DVD and I highly reccommend it. I will probably buy the DVD myself eventually once my LD player wears out hehehe
There is a similiar film that is a rift on I AM LEGEND called THE PEOPLE WHO OWN THE DARK ... it's a 1976 Spanish film with Paul Naschy ... but it is very rare and hard to find. No official DVD release exists although you can find it if you know where to look hehehe.

I have the same widescreen version of LMOE.
For years I've been looking for a real scary movie I saw in the 1980's late one night on TV, the movie looked like it was from the early 70's...I could swear the title was "Til Death", but every search I do pulls up nothing in that realm. It was obviously foreign, I think Spanish. The movie starts with a newlywed couple in a car driving on a road and the car breaking down, and this newlywed couple ended up in a crypt or something, and the wife dies and haunts the husband...thready description, I know, but that's all I remember.
John, any ideas? I was really effective, though schlocky.

You know how things sometimes come to you after you think about it for while hehehe
The film you want is "La Novia ensangrentada" which is better known as "The Blood Spattered Bride" or "Till Death Do Us Part"
Funny thing is I thought about this RIGHT after I posted that I had no clue hehehe
The movie was released on VHS and DVD by Anchor Bay Entertainment in an English language uncut widescreen version. The DVD is even 16x9 enhanced which is nice since this was one of the earlier Anchor Bay DVD releases (back when they did pretty much everything on VHS and DVD). CLICK HERE to go to the Anchor Bay NTSC USA DVD on AMAZON.COM
Here is the DVD cover:
I never saw the film myself but I'm pretty sure this is the one you are talking about. I remember when Anchor Bay released this that a friend of mine said that it is one of the better Spanish horror films and that I should consider getting it (he bought the VHS release). So maybe I'll have to pick this up sometime soon (on DVD of course) before it slips from my memory again.

This review is on the horrordvds.com website and here is a DIRECT LINK to the review.
I also found a review on the dvdmaniacs.net website but there is no way to link directly to the review. So you will have to go find that one yourself. No pics in this review though.

I'm in shock...you actually knew what it was (impressive!)...I finally know!!
I just ordered it (along with the new DOTD) on DEEPDISCOUNTDVD.COM. Funny, I don't remember ANY of the description, but it's gotta be it....and since it was the cut video release I saw, that would explain it. All that sticks out is low-budget, low-quality, creepy and atmospheric.
John...wow...thank you SO much!! Will let you know how it is.
