Will an AVerMedia DVD EZmaker card doing real time MPEG encoding give me as good (or virtually as good) a DVD as capturing in AVI and encoding with TMPGEnc?

    I have a P4, 2.6 Ghz with 256 RAM and am capturing at 720x480.

    No.

If you really want to do real time MPEG-2 capture get a capture card that does it with a hardware encoder such as the Hauppauge WinTV PVR-250 for instance.

But even then you can only do a CBR or psydo VBR

Most movies are well over an hour so to get the best quality a 2-pass VBR encode is usually the best way to go and that is done with software from a captured AVI file for instance where the process doesn't have to work real time.
