How can I convert an authored and finalized DVD-R to DLT for replication?
Iīve been authoring DVDīs for the last 2 years using Reel DVD and Impression Pro. As my projects are DVD-5, I usually burn a sample on Pioneerīs AO5. If the DVD is working properly, I export the project to a Quantum DLT 4000 and I send the tape to the repro house. It always works and the copies are perfect.

However, I was never able to convert a third party authored and finalized DVD-R to DLT. Is there any special software for that ? Any help will be appreciated.

  2. Try imgtools, classic from doom9's site at www.doom9.org. You can create a iso of the completed files in VOB format and there is an option to export to DLT tape.

I don't know if this is true in Brazil, but here in the US there are a number of replication plants that will accept a DVD-R (Authoring or General) as a source for glass mastering.
Obviously, if it's a DVD-R(G), you would also have to provide the usual "mastering" info:
    • What size disc? (12cm or 8cm)
      Single or Dual Layer?
If dual layer, PTP or OTP?
      Single or Dual Sided?
What disc corresponds to what side?
      Add Macrovision, CSS, CGMS?
      etc
If you're doing DL discs, you're gonna need DLT no matter what. But then, you'll need an app that specifically supports the DL, with corresponding DLT output, anyway.

If you can get by with it, sending just the DVD-R makes it slightly easier on your end. The plant may have to convert to DLT first (and if they do, they'll charge extra), but they should tell you this and you can always ask.
Make sure you send a VERY HIGH QUALITY master, with the lowest BLER count you can do. Read: Good writer like Pioneer, Good media like TY or Mitsui, etc, Slow write speed (yeah, yeah, no flames please).

If you can't do it there, just ignore this post.

In Brazil, the repro houses do not accept DVD-R as a master for replication. Neither DVD-R for Authoring, nor DVD-R for General. It was a pain in the neck to find a DLT 4000 still working, and in good conditions here in Brazil. Thatīs why I really need to find a way to convert a third party authored and finalized DVD-R to DLT.

By the way, the ImgTool v0.89 is no longer available for download. I found only ImgTool Classic v0.91.2 and I believe it doesnīt supprt DLT. Where can I get ImgTool v0.89 ???
