Hi everyone, I'm kinda new here but I've been editing some movies for some time now, and I have this problem that I've been trying to deal with for quite a long time, I can't correct it. Allright let's get to the point =) :

I have this movie here, here's a pic of virtualdubmod info on this:

So as you can see it's 704x384 and it's 1h42mins long, so it's size is 1,333,276KB. But I was trying to resize to 352x192, using resize filter and XviD compression in virtualdubmod. I think that by doing that it's size would shrink to half of the original, right? Well here's what preview shows me:

And that's after I disabled sound (actually it was pretty much the same size with sound enabled, don't know why). I don't know what else to do, can anyone help me with this? Thnx a lot.

You must have used the wrong bitrate when congifuring xvid compression. Use a bitrate calculator such as the one found here.

Now that you've mentioned it, changing bitrate won't affect the resulting file size. It doesn't matter if it's 70 kbps or 759 kbps (which is what I'm trying to use here), file size would be that 30 GB shown above.

Also if I change resolution to 528x288 (indicated by the calculator mentioned by you - btw thnx for it) file size jumps to 60+ GB, but that's comprehensible. And also it doesn't matter if compression is through XviD or DivX, file size remains the same.

Perhaps I should describe how I achieved this file. I had two avi's, the 1st and 2nd part of a movie respectively. So I joined them with virtualdubmod, and had no flaws at all, not even audio async. Maybe this could help you guys HELP ME!!!!! =)

    Well thnx again teegee420.

Try re-encoding them seperately. Maybe the joined file contains problems unnoticeable to the eyes and ears that Virtualdub is choking on.

No good. Tried to resize 1st part of the avi just like I did in my first post, and the resulting file size is a bit more than half of the reencoded full avi. I'm beggining to think that maybe it's a codec problem. I'll reinstall my codecs and post the results. Tnhx teegee420, it was worth a shot, I didn't think of doing that.

OMG it didn't work, and I don't know what else to do. I don't understand, I think i'm doing my math ok, resulting bitrate should be 759 kbps, movie size should be 352x192, and VirtualDubMod says resulting file size will be larger than 30GB!!! Here's another pic, GSpot info on original movie:

If someone can help me, please do!!! =P
Otherwise I'll just burn 2 cds with half movie each, but hate that soooooo much...

Thnx for your time to read this.

I've never used Virtual Dub to make an avi, but it looks as if in your case it is saving the file as an uncompressed avi instead of encoding it again. Can you list the steps you are taking to encode it?

Better yet, take a screenshot of how you set up the xvid codec.

All the steps I take in VirtualDubMod:

    1. Load movie in VirtualDubMod
    2. Add filter to resize from 704x384 to 352x192 (half the size =P)
    3. Select audio to direct stream copy, since I don't want to reprocess it (even if I disable audio, it won't affect file size in this case, I don't know why)
    4. Config compression as follows:

And select "Medium" at Motion Search Precision.

    5. Hit preview to take a look at it (here's where I get that strange file size).

I don't know if I'm doing something wrong here, any thoughts?

Dude, do you live in the Twilight Zone or something? This is so fu*king bizarre! Tell you what, just for shits and giggles try encoding as Divx using the same bitrate. Maybe something is wrong with your xvid codec.

Seems like I'm on that show 8) .

teegee240 tnhx for trying to help me, I really appreciate it. I'll try encoding it through DivX, but what I really wanted to have was a XviD+AC3 AVI so I could play it on my PS2

Guess that won't happen . I'll post some results soon.

I loaded a 2 hour avi into vdub and did the same thing you did. The projected file size in the preview window showed up as 122 gigs large! Just for the hell of it, I decided to save the avi anyway. The projected file size dropped to 2 gigs in the preview window. Try encoding your file and see what happens.

OMG IT WORKED!!! What a bug man... It's encoding right now, 1h35min left. Why would that be happening, isn't preview function to PREVIEW file size and stuff?

Anyways thnx a lot Laddydaddy, I'd never try to encode a 30GB+ file on my HDD, there's no room for it .

Hey guys I'm just posting this to thank both of you for helping me. I got my avi with the size I wanted and quality as close as possible to the original one. Here's a pic of Gspot's info over the resulting movie:

Now all I need is to work the subtitle .

    Thnx again guys!!!
