  1. I am looking for a solution, preferably command ilne based, that can take a series of jpgs, named in a sequence, and convert them to an avi, or some other type of video format.

The goal is to have a time-lapse effect, so switched or options on time between frames would be nice.

I realize there are some high-end video editors out there that can do this, like Media Studio Pro, which I have, however these type of programs will bomb out when trying to insert thousands of files. I want something that I can turn loose in a directory and process around 1/4 million files. Or at least in groups of 25K.

    Any ideas?

Avisynth has an ImageReader function which will read images.
Dunno if it can handle that many.

    Vdub will read images also

Do you have these files already ? I'm not sure the file system can do
    250000 files in one folder

  3. I don't know if it can convert your files to AVI, but the only program I know that will automatically put these files in order like that is Flash MX.

I've done animations with jpegs using Vegas Video 4, but I had nowhere near the amount of files your talking about.

  4. You can convert images into any video you want, at least with non-linear editing software like Media Studio Pro, however the problem is the amount of files you can process at once. That program, MSP from Ulead, gives an error message, when you try to select for thatn about 500 files to open at one time. That is why I wanted a command line based tool that could just loop through files in named sequence.

I do have VirtualDub, I will try that now and report back.

  5. I don't think that VirtualDub can take JPEG images, only bmp and tga. If you want to convert them, get IrfanView (its free).

    In IrfranView, go File->Batch Conversion/Rename

Then add all the files, and set them to be converted into bmp or tga files (I reccomend tga, because they are the same quality and smaller image size)

Then in VirtualDub, go File->Open Video File

Then choose the first frame's .bmp or .tga file

    v-dubmod can handle jpegs ..

also --- you will speed things up if you have no more than about 30,000 frames per dir. -- its a windows thing

  8. I tried converting my images to bmps and opening them, but v-dub erros on trying to open them.

It says is can not find the file specified, and it lists the file I am trying to open. Tried converting to tga as well, same thing.

  9. Okay, I am etsting 1000 with Vegas, I can get them in there and on the timeline, of course the movie is way to slow.

When I opened pics in Media Studio Pro, it asks me the duration of each picture, so I can say, something like 00:00:00:01 which is 1/100th of a second.

Where can I find a simimilar feature in Vegas?

in vegas open as a file seq and set frame rate in properties is all -- unless you want to open then as single images - then its in options

targa format in vegas is real time - even for 100,000 , avoid bmp and png and some other formats that qt to open as qt will REALLY slow operation down ..

jpeg and targa (some types) are native to vegas and dont rely on qt ..

In Vegas go to Options>Preferences>Editing>New Still Image Length & adjust the settings to whatever fps medium you are using. Then go through a tedious process of drag & drop. To adjust the speed of the animation, just extend or reduce the length of the jpegs in the time line.

Don't forget to expand the time line so that you can see the pics you are working with.

there is a faster way also if you want each to act like a picture , instead of a frame ..

open file seq as file seq as you normally would (1 frame per pic) ..

hold control key and click on last image and drag it to a new lenth .. now all images are new lenth

  17. Spacejunk,

I used to use a free app called SSMM (Slide Show Movie Maker http://www.joern-thiemann.de/subpage/index.htm?/tools/ssmm/ ), not exactly command line interface but not bloated editor either.

Number of pics only limited by AVI file size limitation in OS/Memory.

Think it may be what your looking for.

It's been enhance bucket loads since I last used it but still looks good for the task.

I now use Pro Show Gold, more flexible for my needs.
