If you are using Windows Media Player, try turning off Overlay mode in the options (Tools, Options, Perfomance tab, Advanced buttom, then uncheck "Use Overlays"). A second option (if you are not using WMP9 to display the video) would be to turn down video hardware acceleration in Windows until you get a good capture. You could also try SnagIt from Techsmith. Download the evaluation version first, to make sure it is suitable for your needs.

Or use Media Player Classic, under file->save image.

Another work around with media player is to open another file first and let it play. Then open the one you want to capture from and print screen all you want. The overlay will only be used on the other clip, so you won't have problems capturing from the 2nd one.

Both WinDVD and PowerDVD have capture options , just pause the DVD and click the camera icon. You can set it to save as a jpeg where you want.
