  1. Hey, I'm looking to get a stand-alone DVD recorder and was wondering if anyone here has had good luck with them or could recommend one. I'm looking at the Lite-On LVW5001 as I don't have a huge budget. Also, do these stand-alones format RW's? And one more question, will a DVD-R/-RW internal drive even read a DVD+R/+RW disc?

    Thanks!

There are so meny threads about this. Look at the left side of the screen, click Forum, then DVD recorders. There is a lot of info there.
    Thanks Mike.

You might be interested to know that Lite-On will very soon be releasing a new model called the LVW-5005 that will be able to write to DVD-R and DVD-RW as well as DVD+R and DVD+RW

It will also be able to write to CD-R and CD-RW in VCD or SVCD formats.

The LVW-5001 only writes to DVD+R and DVD+RW

I've looked at these two models and from what I understand they use an excellent MPEG encoding hardware chip BUT it doesn't seem as though they allow any "flex time" recording. For instance there is a 2 hour mode and then a 4 hour mode. If you want to record something that is 2 hours and 30 minutes guess what ... you have to use the 4 hour mode.

I'm not sure I like that no matter how good the MPEG encoding hardware may be. Other brands (such as Panasonic) can adjust the bitrate so if you select 2 hours and 30 minutes it will use a bitrate that fills the disc which should give a better image overall then using a 4 hour mode.

You don't format an RW, or do you mean erase?

  6. Thanks Fulci for the advice, I think I might wait around for that new Lite-On as I'm partial to DVD-R/-RW.

The Lite-On LVW-5005 has been available for a few weeks. Go to pricegrabber (or wherever) and search for Lite-On LVW-5005. The lowest price currently is $317 plus shipping.

The DVR-L71 is Lite-On's newest unit, which includes an 80 gig hard drive. I don't think it's available yet. There are a few other threads that talk about the 5005 and L71.

I checked out the specs for the Lite-On LVW-L71 and it is impressive.

The think I like about it that is missing from the LVW-5001 and LVW-5005 is that the LVW-71 has some sort of "flex time" recording option.

Add a HDD on top of it and I think we may have a very good stand alone DVD recorder headed our way

  9. I recently read an overview of the LVW-L71 on their website, it does sound impressive and the idea of a hard drive in the unit is something that would be nice. The only thing I don't like is that they never mentioned when it would be available and I'm afraid it'll be around 500 bucks. For $317 I think I'm probably sold on the LVW-5005.
