  1. I'm running win 98 and am using the newest XviD and DivX codecs. I've installed the codecs for playing ogm and everything works fine. I also have ffdshow and everything works fine and plays on windows media player 6.4.

    I tried installing the Matroska Pack for playing mkv files and playing them on windows media player classic and 6.4. This ends up crashing my system. Aslo, after I installed the pack my ogm files stopped playing and wouldn't work anymore. I ended up un-installing the Matroska pack and everything works fine again.

    So, is there something I can do to get mkv files to work on my system along with everything else. Or is it not possible to play both mkv and ogm files. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

    I don't know if this will work, but try opening up your mkv file with Virtualdubmod and then save as avi. Maybe it will play in an avi container. Good luck.

  3. You could download and install just the filters you need.

    For playback, you'll need the Matroska Splitter Filter;
    http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/guliverkli/matroskasplitter_20040311.zip?download

    For Multiplexing you can get the Matroska Muxer Filter;
    http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/guliverkli/matroskamuxer_20031220.zip?download
    (VirtualDub Mod can do its own Multiplexing, so this isn't really necessary)

    What you should know about these filter is that there are two possible versions; ASCII, and Unicode. The Unicode filter will be labeled "Unicode", and is intended for Win2k / WinXP systems.

    Win95, Win98, and i think WinMe don't do Unicode!

    For the simplest install of Matroska Splitter in Win98, just download and extract the "Matroska Splitter Filter" from one of the mirrors, and copy the file "MatroskaSplitter.ax" from the "Release" folder to the directory " C:\Windows\System".

    Remember, "Release Unicode" is for Win2k / XP!

    Now to make it useful you have to register the filter. Do this by going to your "Start-Menu", and select "Run". In the little box type in "REGSVR32 MatroskaSplitter.ax". You should see a popup with confirmation of success or failure.

    Thats It! Directshow should now be able to handle Matroska packaged Audio/Video.

    If you want to undo, you must unregister, and then delete the file.
    (Command is almost the same "REGSVR32 /U MatroskaSplitter.ax")

  4. Do you get the feeling that the filters used in the "Matroska Packs" were Unicode?

    This might explain a couple of the posts i've read concerning problems with Win98.
