  1. Hi i have a number of questions to ask, ive been trying to capture some old VHS tapes to either DVD MPEG2 or DIVX, but havent decided which yet, But the problem lies with the transfer into the computer. I have a ATI Radeon 9600xt card (where apparently ati's multimedia centre is the best program to use for capturing on an ATI card but it doesnt work on my card ) and wether i play a video either through a VCR/TV Combi system (which i think is the best option due to auto tracking ) or a standalone VCR the image appears with some interference which ruins the picture (see picture link)

(PS the bottom half shouldnt be ligter then the rest of it thats something different) The interference i mean is the regular spaced horizontal lines accross the picture which you can see if you zoom in slightly. As the tapes are quite poor quality anyway i want to get the best capture i can. I also have an old Haupagge Win TV which i thought as it is speciallised it may have a better picture then the VIVO of the ATI card but i couldnt get that working in xp Anyway so i wondered if anyone knew what sort of intereference those lines could be linked to? Incidently ive tried it out of both a tv vcr combi and a standalone and the interference is there in both, but a normal tv channel appears without the interference!

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me!

    Steve

PS Incidently i am using iuvcr at the moment for capturing as this seems the most proffessional program that works for capturing

  2. It is most probably a copy guard problem. Suggest you read through the capture forum topic on the ATI theater chip sets.

  3. Do you mean macrovision? As i have some ati hack files to disable the macrovision protection, but they have not made a difference

  4. Although the tapes i am trying to capture are copys of something recorded off tv so they arnt "bought" vhs tapes, so could they have protection?

  5. 1. Use an s-video cable. If your VCR doesn't output s-video then use an s-video->rca adapter (male rca, female s-video).

    2. Adjust the hue setting for the capture filter.

  6. Tried that no luck, had scart adatpor 2 3xphono + svideo, used svideo cable out to svideo in of gfx, same problem. I guess it must be an error of the old recording showing up on a low resolution

    Hi,
The horizontal lines look like "Hanover Bars". They are a slight different colour to your normal video i.e. redish.

Look at your video in Virtualdub as this will show you the actual resolution not a scaled one.

The lines could also be caused by nipping and tucking of the rollers in your video recorder.

How are you capturing your footage and compressing it? What resolution is it?

  8. Hi Ironwood331,
Sorry about late reply, ive been away, but i hope you see this.

Ive tried capturing the video in all sorts of resolutions, but the lines are shown in the live preview "feed" as well. Ive tried many resolutions and i found that the best resolutions were 352x228 or resolutions 352x? i.e. lower resolutions, im using virtualdub at the moment, but ive tried with almost every program i can find. Ive been compressing it with divx low motion, and uncompressed YUY2 / HuffyUV codecs
Also these tapes are being played in a tv/vcr combo, i considered this best because of the auto tracking, these tapes are quite old. I have tried it in a standalone player and had the same problem. However, the picture looks better on the tv as you are watching both pictures!
