  1. I've been time- and space-shifting our DVDs so I can keep the kids in their seats during long flights.

I have some older promo videos which consist of a .bin & .cue pair.

I would like to transcode (and crunch down) to much smaller DiVX .avi or .mp4 but I can't find any tool(s) which does this, despite searching here, at VersionTracker, and the 'net at large.

    What am I missing?

  2. Good answer.

I've installed it, but when I select a .bin file to transcode it sends the following to the Terminal:

    Code:
    % pbpaste | sh

Encoding started on Thu Apr 8 15:53:20 PDT 2004

dyld: /usr/bin/mencoder can't open library: /usr/local/lib/libvorbis.0.dylib (No such file or directory, errno = 2)

    sh: line 1: 8797 Trace/BPT trap /usr/bin/mencoder /foo/KVCD.bin -oac mp3lame -lameopts cbr:br=128:vol=0 -aid 0 -ovc lavc -sws 0 -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:vbitrate=843:keyint=240:vqmin=2:vqmax=15 -ofps 23.976 -vop scale=480:320,crop=352:192:0:24 -o /foo/movie.avi
Sadly, using DarwinPorts to install libvorbis fails. Grrr. Close, but no cigar.

  3. Did you follow the directions for installing the library files when you installed ffmpegx? You need to download some binaries and select them with the included instller.

  4. Yes, all three of them, from the links provided in the pre-installer.

    Most frustrating.

why dont you just rip the bin files to mpeg with vcdtoolsX or vcdgear? then convert the mpegs in either ffmpegX or some other avi converter... that would make alot more sense

  6. Because I have it on good authority *cough* Galactica *cough* that ffmpegX does a good job doing that which I need done.

I just can't get it to work yet. Someone must know how to fix this...

well why pull your hair out trying to get something flawed working when i just gave u an EASY workaround? is it worth being that hardheaded about it? just convert the bin to mpeg and it will be easy sailing.

  8. Bilestyle is right. Use VCDToolsX. Tgpo (what a great guy!) has it for download here http://homepage.mac.com/tgpo/prog/vcdtoolsX.sit and use the vcdxrip button to get the mpeg out. Then select the mpeg in ffmpegx for conversion. Galactica is right, it will do a great job, but helping it out with a good format won't hurt.

  9. I didn't realize I was pulling my own hair. Ouch!!

Thank you both for continuing to hit me with those clue bats.

I'm extracting the .mpg from the .bin now. Thanks.

  10. Works well, but seemingly only with single self-contained .bin files.

With a release which consists of several .bin files I note that vcdXrip does the extraction, which VLC can read (but not random access through), but QuickTime Player doesn't recognize as a valid movie.

Am I missing something, or is there a way of concatenating the .bin files before running them through vcdXrip?

  11. Follow-up on the last post, before a mistake of mine misleads others:

I think part of the problem is a poor source. I notice that VLC can't random-access through this video either. So that's not a problem of the extraction process.

My question then stands thus: "how do I combine .bin files so that I can extract multiple ones (-a, -b, -c, etc.) into one mpeg"?

when did i say that?! you just asked what app you needed for the job, and i told you

you should extract the .mpeg's out of the bins. takes only a couple of min. as per joining bins to extract one large mpeg, it would take the same amount of time as extracting all the bins and joining to make one large mpeg [besides, i dont think you can join bin files!!!]

also, upon creating the large mpeg file, demux and remux it again to remove any time code errors upon joining. this will ensure that any encoding apps dont choke up when they get to the segment points.

That's exactly what I said you said, I think.

I wish ffmpegX would work for me as I'd have less to think about; this is a very busy time for me. But I'll get it working, sooner or later.

I appreciate the patience shown; thanks.

  14. repair permissions. Startup from your OSX cd, get into your DiskUtility and repair your permissions, this often solves the problem. Also mpegtx can join the mpegs you extract. http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/15987
