I have a friend who has a 530a. It worked fine for a while, but now ALL of his software recognizes the drive as a CD burner only. Sony customer support has been no help (of course).
Any thoughts on what the problem could be? I've suggested a few things, but am not sure if I'm leading him in the right direction.

I had this same problem when I put my DRU-530A in an enclosure to make it external and my home pc only reconized it as only cd-rw only. However, my laptop recognized it as a dvd-burner.
It a burning software issue here. I had to upgrade my dvd burning software to Nero 6.3.1.6. -
For some reason my dvd-rw (panasonic 104a) is recognsed as cd player. when rebooted pc, it was recognised as dvd-rw.
Don't waste your media. Burn it on re-writable media first.
