On using later versions of ffmpegX helper apps

I noticed that the mplayer/mencoder binaries we're instructed to download for the installer are dated June of 2003 but the current binaries at http://prdownloads.sf.net/mplayerosx/ are more recent.

Will it cause any catastrophes if we use, or already have newer versions of mplayer/mencoder and use ffmpegX?

Any version which is not the one indicated in the installer window, will not work, or will work only partially.
