I am looking for two types of conversion software. I am looking for something that will convert .VOB to Mpeg2 (or AVI). Second, I am looking for something that will convert Mpeg2 to AVI. The first one I have done before with a trial version of Trex (by Pinnacle), but I now cannot find that software. Any idea where i can find it?

DVD2AVI can produce an AVS file that can then be opened in VirtualDub, which you can use to produce an AVI file with compression of your choice.

VirtualDubMod can be used to directly open a VOB file and produce an AVI. It can also produce an AVI from an MPEG2 file.

Another program built around VirtualDub that will do what you want is VirtualDub-MPEG2. I have not used this version too much, so I cannot make a comparison between the two.

Both are available in the TOOLS section.

    convert .VOB to Mpeg2
No need to convert, since one of the major ingredients in a VOB is a mpeg2 video stream that easily can be extracted with VobEdit or ReJig.

    VirtualDub-MPEG2 is what you need.
    If in doubt, Google it.

    If in doubt, Google it.

At work, we refer to this as pebcak. Problem exists between chair and keyboard.

Aaaaaanyway... back to the problem at hand...

If vdub-mpeg2 is complaining, then there is something wrong with your source files in all likelihood. How did you get the VOB's on to your machine?

When you open the MPEG-2 file in VirtualDub MPEG-2, go to File > File Information. Does it clearly show that there is a video stream ?

Are you trying to open a .MPG, .MPEG, .M2V or a .MP2 file ?
    If in doubt, Google it.

I hope you aren't using the standard VirtualDub ? We mentioned many times that you need a hybrid version called VirtualDub MPEG-2. Click the link.
    If in doubt, Google it.

the one I got was Virtual Dub MPEG-2, but it must have been a bad one. I downloaded another one, and that one works. However, I have to experiment with it. The footage is very interlaced (although that is the way it was before) there is a prominant line in the middle of the screen.

Ok...I have been trying to de-interlace the video with Tmpgenc...but I cannot get it to work properly. It seems that it changes it into an mpg, but there is no video, only sound. Any idea what I might be doing wrong? (by the way, thank you so much for all your help!)

Is the file extension .MP2 ? Do you have it set to System (Video+Audio) ?
    If in doubt, Google it.

    It is pretty hard to work out;
    1. What you are starting with
    2. What you are trying to do with it
    3. What you want it to end up as

Answer these three questions in as much detail as possible and we might be able to work something out.
    If in doubt, Google it.

I would open Tmpgenc and I would drag over the mpeg2 file that I want to de-interlace. Whenever I drag it over, it only show up in the 'Video Source' spot, the 'Audio Source' remains empty. however, I realize now that I only had the System (video) checked. So, I switched it to System (video + audio) and it acts like it is working, but the progress bar does not move at all.

I use SuperDVD Ripper to produce mpeg-1 and mpeg-2 (VCD & SVCD, respectively). You Control-click on each VOB (in the appropriate VOB>SVCD "Wizard" dialog) in reverse order (5, then 4 then 3, etc.); this loads them in the proper order, believe it or not. Follow the rest of the wizard and then be patient. It works great.

Quality is excellent. Only downside is that you don't get a choice of bitrates (SVCD, no "XSVCD", in other words). It will incorporate the subtitle or an alternate language (assuming they are available in the VOB).
