  1. Let's see. The Admin approves a list of candidates who then are named
in a poll and are allowed to campaign. Those who get the most votes become your new moderators with all positions up for grabs in 3 months time.

  4. There is the danger of it turning into a popularity contest, with all the forum politics etc.

    I vote that it's the mod's and Baldrick's decision.

Hey this isn't a democracy and whoever owns the site has the right to do whatsoever he so chooses and that's just fine with me.

I think perhaps we could have a shortlist for "honourary mods" selected by the current mods - everyone then votes on these. The current mods stay until the end of time, but the honourary mods get a three month tenure, and get rolled over. That's not to say that someone can't do consecutive three month terms.
    If in doubt, Google it.

First of all it would be really interest to see Jeex as a moderator... he he he

But, I don't believe that the mods should be elected direct. It is Baldrick's job.
Of course, the mods can suggest users to became mods, but I believe that any user can do it.
In the matter of fact, it happened once before (in 2001): Some users suggest other users to became moderators. There are still around (mostly doom9's place - we have feed that forum with many users over the years...)
Maybe a sticky with suggestions about mods could be usefull, but I don't believe that the mods or Baldtrick don't know who is capable for this position... Who can be a moderator shows pretty fast, if you are in the forums - and in the net in general - for years. And I believe, most mods and definatelly Baldrick are years in the biz...

    Maybe, but....

I think there should be some input from us general users.

Some of us have received help and advice time and time again from the same people on this forum. These people know an awful lot of information about various video matters and conduct themselves in exemplary fashion.

There are also other users who are solid individuals who know right from wrong but can still have a laugh with the rest of us (isn't that what a 'moderator' is about?).

However, in chosing a moderator, one must avoid turning it into a popularity contest between post-whores who add nothing to this site. There are plenty of these here and making them moderators would be a big mistake.

If anything, the current mods should 'invite' certain individuals to stand for a position and let us decide that way.
    Regards,

    Rob

...but why? It's Baldricks place, and he appoints mods as he sees fit. Those who doesn't like it are free to leave.

don't see a point. the people who contribute a lot can continue to do so without being mods.

I think this would end up being a popularity contest more than a benefit to the site.

  18. No.

Moderators should be selected based on their ability to handle the non-video issues of this forum. Which, in my opinion, is where the problems tend to reside.

A video expert is not necessarily going to have the people skills to be an effective moderator, nor would a long-time member or high-count poster necessarily be effective. And, I think a public poll would be nothing more than a popularity contest.

From what I've seen in my time here, our moderators do good work. Whatever criteria was used to bring them onboard should remain. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

NO, they should be elected by other Moderators.

    What is this... high school?

Absolutely not. This is a private site. Those that the owners feel as qualified (and as needed) shall moderate it.

If you need to vote, we have elections later this year... and the voting tends to yield low turnouts. Could always use more... especially intelligent ones. I don't know how OZ is, but I'm sure you vote in something sometime. Go to that.

Ridiculous, no, of course not, but I suppose a worthy poll if only to get a wide spectrum of opinion...
This is Baldricks site, it's his call and his alone.

What we should have is the ability to vent our opinion without recourse on those moderators doing a piss-poor job.

What we should have is the chance to rotate the moderator list like English footie, ie. the worst gets kicked off and Baldrick gets to choose another one.
    Every three months perhaps.
That would keep them on their toes
No, only joking, leave it as it is but let's give the members the opportunity to rate the moderators.
What would be a good idea is if each moderator has a red and green button next to his username, in his profile maybe, which you can click green when you see they've contributed to the site and red when they're fucked up.
Of course it's open to abuse, unworkable, trivial and therefore unecessary, extra work for Baldrick; I'm just thinking out loud.

If anything, the current mods should 'invite' certain individuals to stand for a position and let us decide that way.
Burt Rob, that's just doing exactly what you warned against, a huge popularity contest.
A moderator doesn't need a huge input in the site, look a tgpo, very fair and balanced in his actions but has no input whatsoever of a video nature
To sum up, a bad idea, if Baldrick wants a new one he either knows who he wants or he asks Moderators privately for opinion.
Let's not forget, Baldrick gave moderator status out for anyone writing a guide once, so the standard can't be so high

  24. Running this place is the job of the guy who owns the hardware and keeps it running. He alone should be the one to decide whether an individual is mature or stable enough to moderate forums. He should know the person, not only from online chats, but if he's lucky, meet him in person and chat with him face to face.

When I contributed (oh, shoot, I ought to contribute again soon) I was paying for the vision of the person running this place and keeping everything honest, fair and aboveboard. I trust that person to bring on people who can hold to that vision and set of ideals. And only he would know such people. We, the unwashed users, wouldn't.

Not quite. At least whoever would be chosen would already have the necessary qualities - I'd like to think that not any old post-whore would be invited to stand.
